Will 2013 be the Beginning of the End for SharePoint? (AIIM)
I don’t like starting the year off on a negative note, but I just have to wonder if 2012 won’t be considered to be the year that SharePoint stopped expanding and began to collapse due to its own gravity. As I look back across my world in 2012, I see a nice sized list of SharePoint achievements that make me proud, but I also see a list of accomplishments that absolutely required development resources. Now, if you’re not sure what I mean by “development resource” welcome to the club. You might want to read Bjorn Furuknap’s latest blog entry or you might want to avoid reading it because it might scare you. I know that it scares me! Continue reading this entry »

I’m a SharePoint conference veteran. I’ve attended each once since they officially started in 2008, including the most recent one late last year in Las Vegas. SharePoint in Review 2012: Planned Deployments, Information Access Still Key (CMSWire)
What would a year in information management be without SharePoint — any kind of SharePoint? We have to be careful to clarify now as talking about SharePoint could involve any one of four groups of products. In other words, we could be talking about the 2003 version — and yes it is still being used — the 2007 and 2010 version, and SharePoint 2013. Continue reading this entry »

How Clifford Chance Bet on SharePoint for Enterprise Content Management (CMSWire)
In the legal community, it’s well known that Clifford Chance, one of the world’s largest law firms, has been undergoing a major shift towards using SharePoint as the firm’s Enterprise CMS. At the SharePoint Conference last week, I attended the session dedicated to exploring this implementation in more detail. This transition has been a couple of years in the running, and we’ve previously learned a bit of the transformation through various interviews and other bits from Microsoft. The session was delivered by Charlie Winterbottom, Solution Architect at Clifford Chance, and Alex O’Donnell, a SharePoint Consultant at Microsoft’s internal services team. How To Evaluate Collaboration Vendors: Eight Variables (CMSWire)
I’m sure you have noticed that many of the enterprise collaboration vendors out there are starting to look very similar; not just in appearance, but also in functionality. In fact, if you were to visit the exhibit hall at a collaboration conference and cover up the logos of the vendors, it would be pretty hard to differentiate who is who. Vendors know this and customers know this. Continue reading this entry »

[Infographic] SharePoint 2013 in 2012 (CMSWire)
In August, we illustrated the current state of SharePoint. As it is now December and time for retrospectives, we decided that we’d take a look back at what kept us most engaged about SharePoint this year — SharePoint 2013. Currently in beta and scheduled to be released for the public in the first quarter of 2013, we spent a great deal of time dissecting it, testing it, previewing it, and deciding whether it was worth upgrading to or not. Microsoft Pushes ‘Cloud-First’ Approach with SharePoint 2013 (Redmond Channel Partner)
SharePoint 2013, combined with Office 2013, will test the limits of how far organizations are willing to go to phase out their premises-based software in favor of shifting everyday work to a services-based model. That’s not to suggest that your customers will or should scrap their SharePoint deployments in favor of Office 365 or some other instantiation of the Microsoft collaboration platform that’s subscription-based or hosted elsewhere. It’s not an either-or proposition. But make no mistake: Microsoft wants your customers to gravitate to the SharePoint Online component of its Office 365 service. Continue reading this entry »
