The Art of SharePoint Success: Architecture – The User Centric Intranet (CMSWire)
In this week’s installment of The Art of SharePoint Success, we are going to consider how we can further evolve the model developed in the previous two posts, discuss what Microsoft are doing to “fix” their own intranet and speculate wildly about what might be coming in SharePoint 15. SharePoint App Store: Should Microsoft Vet Contents? (CMSWire)
Rumors and conjecture have circulated about a possible SharePoint App store since the release of SharePoint 2010. A number of independent attempts currently exist, though they amount to little more than website catalogs. An official app store was thought to be part of Microsoft’s launch plans for SharePoint 2010, but it is believed that logistical and technical issues prevented it from becoming a reality. With the success of the iOS version and official plans for a Windows 8 store, it’s almost certain we will see something soon for SharePoint. Continue reading this entry »

The Root of All Evil: SharePoint Information Architecture and Happy End Users (CMSWire)
So you may have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly around SharePoint information architecture (IA). In this post, I’ll address common concerns surrounding SharePoint IA and discuss how a better understanding of IA can help you to improve the effectiveness of your SharePoint environment. I see a lot of SharePoint in my work with clients: safe to say that 99% of them have SharePoint in some form or other, and 75% have a substantial SharePoint footprint enterprise wide. How SharePoint 2010′s Content Organizer Supports Governance (CMSWire)
Back in March, I talked about 8 ways web content management has improved in SharePoint 2010. Each feature contributes in some way to a richer SharePoint experience that end users are quickly becoming fond of. One feature that I think needs a little more showcasing is the new content organizer. It’s not flashy like the new AJAX GUI or slick like the new WYSIWYG editor, but it may become one of the most useful tools at your disposal. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Is the New Access (Redmond Developer News)
Microsoft offers no shortage of options for developing so-called “forms over data” applications. Whether using data-binding technologies in the Microsoft .NET Framework, the Data Sources Window and its drag-and-drop capabilities in Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight, or ASP.NET Dynamic Data, Microsoft has got you covered. Really, the scenario of building data-focused screens and applications has been one that Microsoft has assisted us with since the dawn of Access version 1.0. Continue reading this entry »

PerformancePoint Services in SharePoint 2010 (SQL Server Magazine)
There used to be a product called Microsoft Office Business Scorecard Manager. It had some compelling monitoring and analytic capabilities. As a successor to that product, Microsoft released a product called Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server in November 2007. PerformancePoint Server 2007 included monitoring and analytic features, such as dashboards, scorecards, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), reports, filters, and strategy maps, which are delivered via a monitoring server. There were primarily two client user interfaces to the monitoring server, namely the Dashboard Designer and various SharePoint Web Parts. The Dashboard Designer was a thick client application downloaded from the monitoring server, which allowed power users to do the following: Continue reading this entry »

Kicking the Tires on SharePoint 2010 (SearchWinT)
SharePoint 2010 offers big improvements over its younger sibling Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007. In this newest iteration of SharePoint, Microsoft has spiffed up some existing features in ways that are likely to bring smiles to IT departments and end users everywhere. But even though Microsoft worked hard in SharePoint 2010 to fix some of the biggest and most irksome problems left over from MOSS 2007, it would have been nice if it could have taken care of some nagging smaller issues in this latest version. Microsoft Expands Its Online Services Markets (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft today announced the expansion of its Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) to 17 new markets. The expansion of Microsoft’s hosted application service follows Monday’s announcement that Microsoft has broadened the availability of its Windows Azure cloud computing platform to “20 countries and regions.” The two services currently are not housed in the same datacenters, according to veteran Microsoft watcher Mary-Jo Foley, although she noted the countries described in Microsoft’s two announcements tend to track.
