SharePoint in the Cloud Found Lacking for Enterprise Customers (Yahoo! News)
Microsoft’s SharePoint cloud offering, part of Office 365, does not co-exist easily with existing on-premise installations, and should be considered primarily for “greenfield” environments, according to research released this week by The Real Story Group, an independent analyst firm. “SharePoint Online shares most of the benefits and drawbacks of its on-premise cousin, but with one key twist,” notes The Real Story Group founder, Tony Byrne. “It doesn’t play nicely with the on-premise version.” Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Integration Considerations for Every Exchange Organization (SearchExchange)
Many companies that rely on Exchange Server and Microsoft Outlook also use SharePoint for things like data warehousing, workflow reporting and social networking. However, not every company integrates these products in a way that takes full advantage of SharePoint’s capabilities. We recently spoke with Errin O’Connor, founder and CEO of the EPC Group, a SharePoint consulting firm based in Houston, about some little-known ways to take advantage of Exchange, Outlook and SharePoint. We also discussed some common issues, some of the least efficient ways to use these tools and when to consider a move to the hosted version of these offerings as part of the Office 365 suite. Five Tips for Securing SharePoint Data (VoiceAndData)
SharePoint’s ability to function as a data repository and a collaboration platform has made it popular with many organisations. SharePoint does include some basic security building blocks – like permissions and auditing – but successfully harnessing these, and addressing some of the gaps in native SharePoint, is critical for achieving effective data security. Not only can SharePoint store an organisation’s sensitive business data, it can help automate business processes around that data. When organisations begin to leverage SharePoint as a core business system, the importance of securing SharePoint data and applications comes into focus. Continue reading this entry »

Choosing SharePoint: An Innovative Approach to Just About Anything (CMSWire)
I recently spoke with a client of mine on a new prospective project using SharePoint to deliver a records management solution. The solution was to replace an existing, outdated product that was in major need of a facelift. “Great!” I said. I prepared my finest consulting slides and brushed up on a few records management topics that I had become rusty on, and I was on my way to winning a new project. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Implementation the Right Way (CMSWire)
In my last post, I outlined the decision point that the SharePoint user community faces right now. I caught some flak after the post that I want to address here head-on: some folks pointed out that whatever SharePoint can or can’t do in theory, in practice SharePoint implementations frequently fail to provide improved document management…and organizations find themselves with as big (or bigger) of a mess as they had with shared drives, Lotus Notes or whatever else was in place before SharePoint came along. SharePoint Daily LogoToday I have included a link to an Enterprise Collaboration White Paper that requires you register with the site. I have generally avoided links like this because it annoys me to have to register to see content. But… this isn’t really about me. Tell me what you think. Should I include links to sites that may require registration?  -  Dooley

Understanding Cultural Requirements (AIIM)
I saw a Wi-Fi placard in a hotel recently and laughed that it still touted the service as being “50 times faster than dialup.” I can’t remember the last time I even owned a computer with a modem, much less care about that useless comparison. I marvel at the speed of change in technology during my 20+ year career, largely in IT roles. I occasionally share a story of years back when I was excited to gain access to a bulletin board service (BBS) in which dungeon masters shared maps and monster charts and other role playing guidance (which makes me a nerd on a couple different levels, I know). Jump forward to today, and the way in which the rising generation communicates with each other, and with the world at large, has changed dramatically. Collaboration tools have become ubiquitous. Inside SharePoint 2010, Part 1: The Mile-High View (Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows)
While most readers are likely familiar with the name SharePoint, it’s equally likely that many of you, like me, rarely if ever actually use the product. I aim to change that. Thanks to my testing of the Office 365 service over the past nine months, I’ve become more and more intrigued by this jack-of-all-trades product which, like an old SNL skit, is both a dessert topping and a floor wax, a product so versatile and useful that it defies you to describe it quickly and simply.
