SharePoint libraries, lists, file shares, Dropbox folders, Google Drive, Amazon EC2 storage, SkyDrive — need I go on? Your employees can, and likely already do, store documents in one or more locations. So how do you ensure that your data is secure? How do you ensure that compliance is enforced? That your governance processes are being followed? Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint 2013 Upgrade Offers a Chance to Get it Right (GCN)
For many organizations, deploying Microsoft’s SharePoint content management and collaboration software has been an unplanned, underdeveloped, unloved, but not unpopular endeavor, say industry experts. SharePoint entered a lot of public-sector agencies through small, independent workgroups and has grown very rapidly — but in an unstructured manner. Although Microsoft positioned SharePoint as a platform, most users didn’t treat it that way, installing the software more as a stand-alone application, said John Mancini, president of AIIM, a global non-profit association that supports the information management community. Why I Don’t Need SharePoint (AIIM)
Let’s get this out of the way right from the start: I don’t use Microsoft SharePoint. I’m not saying that it’s a bad product or that it doesn’t satisfy anyone, quite the opposite in fact. SharePoint is a good product, serving millions of customers and at the same time a nice platform upon which a lot of developers are making a living building extensions and selling integration services. It is especially interesting in full Microsoft shops, where it integrates natively with Microsoft Windows and Office, and allows customers to have a single vendor to deal with. The main problem is that SharePoint is a tool trying to satisfy many demands to once including file sharing, content discovery, document management, collaboration, web content management, web site building and some social tools. A more focused solution might be a better choice as a complex platform may also be a burden for IT to deal with. This article is really about looking at the SharePoint alternatives, and why you may want to consider them. Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft offered more details on the improvements in its SharePoint collaboration platform, which is slated to be released as a service and a server in 2013. Many SharePoint 2013 features are already available for testing in the Office 365 previews, which the company released last month. Jared Spataro, senior director for SharePoint product management at Microsoft, offered a quick tour of some highlights in the new SharePoint, during a demonstration for technology reviewers on Tuesday. According to Spataro, the underlying architecture hasn’t changed very much with this release, but the company has added some upgrades and I/O performance improvements. Continue reading this entry »

Inside SharePoint 2010, Part 2: Internet Web Sites (SuperSite For Windows)
SharePoint is widely lauded for its sites-based intranet and extranet capabilities, which allow users to share virtually anything with coworkers, partners, and others. Less well known, however, is SharePoint’s related functionality for managing and publishing publically-facing Internet web sites. And even those who have explored this area in the past will find that SharePoint 2010 (and SharePoint Online, part of Office 365) has dramatically improved Internet site capabilities, in response to customer requests. This isn’t your father’s SharePoint. Continue reading this entry »

While most readers are likely familiar with the name SharePoint, it’s equally likely that many of you, like me, rarely if ever actually use the product. I aim to change that. Thanks to my testing of the Office 365 service over the past nine months, I’ve become more and more intrigued by this jack-of-all-trades product which, like an old SNL skit, is both a dessert topping and a floor wax, a product so versatile and useful that it defies you to describe it quickly and simply.
