Information Management: 5 Business Process Issues that Enterprises Need to Fix (CMSWire)
While the sight of a business manager bristling with indignation over “inefficiencies” in the enterprise is a common one, and one of the accepted methods of increasing productivity is better business processes, research published by Iron Mountain would seem to suggest that, from an IT perspective, a good deal of the problem lies with institutionalized inertia rather that with particular products or workforce segments. While that may seem like a sweeping generalization,  at least superficially — and, in fact, probably is, if you take it apart —  the findings of Iron Mountain’s Managing Information: Trends in Business Process Efficiency would seem to suggest that, while many companies are aware of inefficiencies in business process management, quite a number are not doing a lot about it. Office 2010 & SharePoint 2010 (Processor.com)
Updates to Microsoft Office come like clockwork about every three years, so 2010 brings a new release. From the original hodgepodge of productivity applications, Microsoft’s suite has evolved into a portal to its two backend collaboration servers, Exchange and SharePoint, which are released on the same schedule. Yet this year’s editions seem to exist more for Microsoft’s benefit, facilitating the migration of its productivity and collaboration applications to online SaaS (software-as-a-service) offerings, than the result of any burning customer needs. Still, the vast majority of enterprises (upward of 80%, according to a Forrester Research survey) use Office, with most also relying on SharePoint for collaboration services, so each new release is highly anticipated. SharePoint Is the New Access (Redmond Developer News)
Microsoft offers no shortage of options for developing so-called “forms over data” applications. Whether using data-binding technologies in the Microsoft .NET Framework, the Data Sources Window and its drag-and-drop capabilities in Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight, or ASP.NET Dynamic Data, Microsoft has got you covered. The problem typically manifests itself when IIS users trying to access a SharePoint page get the error message “Cannot connect to the configuration database.” Admins may get the message “Unable to connect to the configuration database.” Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint is a Hit for Microsoft but Still Clunky for IT (SearchWinIT)
For Microsoft, SharePoint has by many estimates been a runaway success, but for many IT pros and business users here this week, the enterprise collaboration software is no game changer. In fact, in some cases it can be an expensive boondoggle. Everyone agrees that SharePoint is here to stay. Some IT experts say it’s quickly becoming the de facto collaboration platform not just in Windows shops but also at companies that may not traditionally consider Microsoft platforms — say, those with a large population of Unix and Linux machines. Office 2010 is in the Stores. Yawn. (ComputerWorld)
Am I the only who finds Forrester analyst JP Gowdner’s blog proclamation that “Office 2010, Microsoft’s latest release, will continue to succeed with consumers” and “In terms of usage and penetration, Google Docs remains a failure” on the eve of Office 2010′s arrival to retails stores be a little… suspicious? Could it have anything to do with Microsoft’s just launched $80 million Office 2010 ad campaign? Gowdner, who covers the consumer market and not the business market, maintains that Microsoft Office 2010 is going to stay on top because:”The browser-based experience remains limited;” “Consumers have a deep, longstanding relationship with Office; and “Local computing power is plentiful and cheap.” Continue reading this entry »
