The Year of Enterprise Collaboration; Microsoft’s Big Hits & Misses; The Mayans Were Right: IE10 Is Good Now

SharePoint Daily LogoI’d like to thank you all for following SharePoint Daily for another year. Today celebrates two things for me. The obvious is the end of the year. In the spirit of the new year I am going to take a few days off to rest and recharge and hope you are all able to do the same. The second is that (if my math is correct) today marks 1,000 posts to SharePoint Daily. I honestly never thought Daily would last that long or build the extremely loyal following that it has. I appreciate all the words of wisdom, suggestions, and emails of concern when I take an unannounced break. I couldn’t have done it without. you. I’ll see you in January. Happy Holidays.  -  Dooley

And so would 2013. We’re a long way from realizing the potential of enterprise collaboration, but I think the coming year will bring some impressive advancements. Here are a few of my hopes for what we’ll see in 2013: Continue reading this entry »

Is SharePoint in the Cloud for You? (CMSWire)
The days of Microsoft SharePoint being only a locally installed software product are over. Microsoft’s commitment to SharePoint in the cloud is evident in its massive data-center investments, its costly retrofitting of the code base to support multitenancy and access via subscription and its emphasis on “cloud” in sales and marketing efforts. But the reality is Office 365/SharePoint Online are still only release two and Microsoft usually needs three releases to get a product right. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint 2013 is a Missed Opportunity (BetaNews)
There is lots to like in SharePoint 2013 preview. The new interface stylings, whilst inconsistent in their current form, show some nice touches. The new social features are a big improvement on what went before. SkyDrive integration is potentially very useful, and adds to what was already a very solid document management offering. But my overall feeling: SharePoint 2013 is a missed opportunity. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint is a ‘Document Coffin’, says IBM (ComputerWorld)
IBM had nothing but strong words to say about its competitor Microsoft, at the opening session of this year’s Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida. Jeff Schick, vice president of social software at IBM, told the audience of over 1000 developers, clients, and media, that the enterprise content management system (ECM) was good for little beyond storing documents. “Content at rest is expensive, content in motion is valuable,” says Schick. “Unfortunately, a lot of CMS today are just expensive vaults. SharePoint is today’s document coffin.” Continue reading this entry »

Box.Net: Simplicity, the Cloud & Taking on SharePoint (CMSWire)
At one time, when professionals thought of sharing and collaboration, Microsoft’s SharePoint stood out as the standard solution. These days, the extensive features of SharePoint might also give its competition the upper hand, particularly in the cloud. At least that’s what Aaron Levie, CEO and co-founder of Box.net, thinks. “The vision around Box is that we want to make it incredibly easy for people in businesses to share, manage, and get to their content from anywhere,” Levie tells CMSWire. “Box does this by delivering a cloud solution that can be accessed from any mobile device — iPad, iPhone, Android — integrated into nearly any application you’re using (Salesforce, Netsuite, etc.), and used across organizations.” Continue reading this entry »

You Think You Use SharePoint But You Really Don’t (TechRepublic)
Thousands of organizations have implemented SharePoint but fail to exploit the most obvious of SharePoint’s many benefits. Here are some suggestions for a SharePoint roadmap that can succeed. You see it all around you, good SharePoint gone bad. The number of SharePoint deployments in the world today has six digits in it, and four-fifths of them suck. That’s a subjective observation, of course; many who deploy SharePoint (especially the license-free version) don’t have very high ambitions. The irony is, they could aim much higher, and get a lot more out of their deployment without upgrading to the more expensive version. Continue reading this entry »
