Big is Relative (AIIM)
Last November, I had the privilege of listening to a keynote presentation by Christer Johnson from IBM about Big Data at the Gilbane Conference. I wrote about my reaction to that keynote shortly after hearing it, but somehow I knew that this concept would haunt me. Before I started writing this, I went back and reread that earlier post. Part of my reason was to make sure that I didn’t bore the three people who might read both blogs, but part was to make sure the two entries work together. That doesn’t mean I can’t change my mind in three months, but if I did, I should tell you. Newsflash, I haven’t changed my mind, but I have refined my opinion on Big Data (read that as if I were using a megaphone please). As the title indicates, big is relative. SharePoint is Crack and Microsoft is the Pusher (CMSWire)
SharePoint is crack and Microsoft is the pusher. Yeah, I said it. Listen up now, I’ll say it again. SharePoint is crack and Microsoft is the pusher! The other week, I wrote an article that stirred up a bunch of CMS, DMS, ECMS and other content professionals enough to make them comment. Some agreed, some poked at what they perceived to be holes in my central claim. And a couple took it as an opportunity to express their opinion of how SharePoint is the divine gift to business and IT professionals. It seems like I’ve seen this tableau before, maybe even more than once. Continue reading this entry »

How Microsoft Partners Are Selling Office 365 (Redmond Channel Partner)
The release of Office 365 is arguably the most disruptive new offering to the Microsoft channel in recent memory and one that will change the way many partners sell messaging, collaboration, productivity and communications. Even if you continue to sell only the on premises-based versions of Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and Office, partners know they will have to have a discussion about Office 365 with their customers. SharePoint Daily LogoCongratulations to all of the winners of the SharePoint Awards 2011. There were some tough choices in almost all categories this year. While I may have been a bit biased in wanting SharePoint Daily to win, I can say I was beaten by some great sites. So, is it too early to start the trash-talk for next year?  [:)] –Chris

Microsoft’s Own Numbers Suggest Declining Windows Market Share (InfoWorld)
Last summer, Microsoft announced that it had sold 175,000,000 Windows 7 licenses through the end of June 2010. Cranking together a few numbers produced some surprising results, which I talked about in my July 26, 2010, article “Do the math: 175 million copies of Windows 7 isn’t that impressive.” Last Friday, Brandon LeBlanc said the following on the Windows Team Blog: “18 months ago to this day was when we launched Windows 7 and with that we’ve hit another important milestone: we are pleased to announce that Windows 7 has sold more than 350 million licenses. The momentum we’ve seen and continue to see with Windows 7 is incredible.” Continue reading this entry »

InfoWorld Preview: Office 365 Beta (NetworkWorld)
In spite of what you may have heard, Microsoft isn’t betting the farm on Office 365. But Redmond is certainly sacrificing its largest cash cow to the cloud gods.  With Office 365 available in open beta today, everyone has a chance to see what’s new, what’s old, and what’s in desperate need of improvement. Permit me to point out some of the high spots. I’ll also show you how to avoid a few pitfalls I encountered when getting started. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Daily LogoBamboo’s coverage of the Best Practices Conference in London kicks into full swing today. We have the scoop on appearances by Queen Elizabeth, Marilyn Monroe (um, what?) and a great cast of SharePoint experts from around the world. Personally I want details from SharePint and ShareRave, but I doubt there will be much written about that. I think I overheard someone muttering ”What happens in London, stays in London.”   –Chris

LinkedIn’s New Platform Is All About Identity (GigaOM)
Last week, LinkedIn unveiled an upgraded version of its platform to developers. The professional social network has tried since 2009 to establish itself as a platform with open APIs and services for third parties, not to simply copy Facebook, but to confirm itself as the source for professional profiles. With 100 million users and an upcoming IPO, what are the chances of LinkedIn sealing up this role? Continue reading this entry »

What Type of SharePoint User Are You?; The Road to Enterprise Collaboration; How Windows Phone 7 Could Prevail

SharePoint Daily LogoI am horrible at remembering events. You can ask my family how many birthdays and random holidays I have completely spaced on even though I have alerts set up on my phone. They are mostly used to it by now and don’t think too much about my forgetfulness. Every now and then I miss a big event and have to try and make up for it later… While I am late, as usual, I felt I had to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICROSOFT! I’ll do you a favor and not sing but I will be over later with a cake and party hats.  –Chris

Three Phases of SharePoint: What Type of User Are You? (NetworkWorld)
SharePoint, Microsoft’s software program offering everything from online document management to Intranets to social networking sites, has over 100 million users and a majority of them are from Fortune 500 companies, according to Microsoft. But SharePoint is a sprawling piece of software and rarely does any business use it for all its features. Some organizations implement SharePoint for immediate needs like social networking or document management. Or it could be used as a platform to organize all your business apps and establish policies for content types and taxonomies. Some of the heavier SharePoint customers use it to plan their technology roadmaps. Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft Pushes SharePoint Into the Cloud (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft’s SharePoint platform has grown “really large, really fast” and there are significant “challenges” that the company needs to focus on, says Joel Oleson, a former Microsoft employee who specialised in the product. Oleson worked for Microsoft developing SharePoint for 10 years, but three years ago he moved to consultancy Quest. He was in New Zealand recently to address the third annual SharePoint conference held in Wellington. Continue reading this entry »

Competing With SharePoint; Working From Your Cell Phone; Browser Updates: The War Continues

SharePoint Daily LogoThere have been three major browser updates in the last few weeks, all of which come with their own quirks. As of this latest round of updates I need at least three browsers installed to do my job. My newsletter admin tools don’t  like IE9. A polling site I use doesn’t like Firefox. Chrome displays things in odd colors (sometimes). I have been working in the tech industry long enough that I should know better than to download updates the day they are released. Maybe you can help explain… why do I feel the need to download the latest version of everything even when I know that there will be issues?   –Chris

SharePoint Tries to Keep Up (MIT Technology Review)
The collaboration tools discussed this month in Business Impact all have one thing in common. One way or another, they will run up against the market leader: Microsoft’s SharePoint software, which is used by more than 100 million people around the world. SharePoint’s success can be attributed to several factors. One, it does a lot: among other things, it lets employees share documents, search internal files, coordinate tasks, and send each other instant messages through a central portal. Second, customers like the fact that it works well with other widely used Microsoft products, such as Exchange e-mail and the Office software package. Third, Microsoft offers a basic version of SharePoint free to companies that run servers with Windows software. Continue reading this entry »
