Convention Over Configuration with MVC and Autofac (Fear and Loathing)
One of the key things to wrap your head around when doing good software development using frameworks like ASP.NET MVC is the idea of convention over configuration (or coding by convention). The idea is that rather than messing around with configuration files about where to find things, how to register IoC containers, etc. that we used to do, you follow a convention, a way of doing things. The example normally expressed is a class in your model called “Sale” and a database named “Sales”. If you don’t do anything that’s how the system will work but if you decide to change the name of the database to “Products_Sold” then you need some kind of configuration to tell the system how to find the backend database. Otherwise it can naturally find it based on the naming strategy of your domain.

My Experience Migrating to Office 365 (Andrew Connell)
While it isn’t exactly spring yet, but it sure feels like it where I’m from. I live in north-east Florida where it is usually much colder in January & February (30F’s-50F’s) than we are seeing now (50F’s-80F’s). The first one, migrating my blog & site from the seemingly dead SubText engine to the open source OrchardCMS platform and host it on Windows Azure (currently working on this and I’ll have a whole series of posts on it once it’s done). How to: Sort Search Queries in SharePoint 2013 (Dot Net Mafia)
Sorting search results has always been an interesting subject in SharePoint.  It was actually harder to do than you would think.  In SharePoint 2007, all you had was relevance and modified date (write).  The KeywordQuery class did not have anything to allow you to sort.  You could get around this though by using SQL Syntax though but it was not ideal.  As a reminder, you should stop using SQL Syntax now.  In SharePoint 2010, Microsoft added a SortList property to the KeywordQuery class however, if you tried to use it, you would likely get the error: Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040E60.  This is because, code was added to prevent SharePoint 2010 to sort on anything but relevance and modified date.  The only way to get sortable search results was to add FAST Search for SharePoint (FS4SP).   That was unfortunate as many people wanted to sort but did not want to make that kind of investment.

Sometimes it’s the simple solutions that are the best. I was recently asked if Export/Import-SPWeb could be used to create a copy of a list within a site in SharePoint 2010, the reason for doing this was to take one large list and split it into two smaller lists – easy I thought! However taking a look at the syntax for Import-SPWeb – http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607613(v=office.14) it’s not actually possible to rename a list on import. By default if a list exists at the same URL it will be overwritten/merged on import depending on settings used with the UpdateVersions parameter.

I’ve documented a few times how I feel Microsoft is attempting to control end-user behavior – from killing the Start button in Windows 8 to blocking used games from working on the Xbox 360 successor – and from what I’ve read about the end-user license agreement (EULA) for Office 2013, the trend is continuing. The retail license agreement for Office 2013 locks it to the PC on which you install it forever. If you buy a new PC, you can’t reinstall Office 2013. The same applies when reinstalling Windows. If you have to reinstall Windows for whatever reason, that Office 2013 DVD is now a drink coaster.

Windows Azure Restored Following Global Outage from Expired SSL Certificate (RedmondMag)
Microsoft’s Windows Azure storage was back online Saturday after an expired SSL certificate left customers unable to access their data. The cloud service went down Friday afternoon when the SSL certificate expired and remained unavailable until Saturday morning. The worldwide outage affected HTTPS traffic accessing storage, though did not impact less secure HTTP traffic, the company confirmed on the Windows Azure Dashboard.

Because apps for SharePoint contain all the resources that they need to function, they are very safe to use and also can be uninstalled cleanly. This post focuses on Business Connectivity Services support for apps for SharePoint. Business Connectivity Services supports apps for SharePoint in two ways. First, BCS models can be scoped to apps for SharePoint. Second, connection information is defined and stored separately from the app-scoped BCS model in BCS connections.

No Metadata? No Problem! Custom Entity Extraction in SharePoint 2013 (Dot Net Mafia)
Every organization wants better search results.  However, few have actually spent the time to create file plans, content types, and managed properties to make it happen.  SharePoint 2013 has a feature called entity extraction though that can actually infer values by comparing what it finds in the body of the document to a dictionary.  This feature is Entity Extraction.  If you are familiar with FAST Search for SharePoint or FAST ESP, you know that entity extraction is nothing new.  What it does is gives you the power to infer the values of managed properties in search without having metadata in your site columns.  FS4SP and SharePoint 2013 come with an extraction dictionaries for company names out-of-the-box.  This means when it crawls it will search the contents of the body of your documents and if it recognizes any companies it knows, you can then search and refine on it.  However, the true value comes when you create your own.  SharePoint 2013 makes it really easy to create these custom dictionaries.

Survey: Many Organizations Remain on SharePoint 2003, 2007 (Fierce Content Management)
A survey conducted by Metalogix at the SharePoint Conference in November has found that of the 100 administrators who were surveyed, most reported that they were using older versions of SharePoint. The survey found that of the companies surveyed, approximately 40 percent were still on SharePoint 2003 or 2007, while 90 percent were overseeing at least one SharePoint farm running SharePoint 2010. Just 10 percent were running Office 365 in the cloud. If you’re wondering why it adds up over 100 percent, the respondents were big companies, often running multiple SharePoint farms.

Nasuni is a closely-held supplier of turnkey data protection appliances that use public Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers’ object storage repositories as backup and recovery targets. While Nasuni officials said they conducted more exhaustive tests for the shootout, such as by benchmarking a wider range of file sizes (from 1KB to 1GB), the company only compared five preferred IaaS providers — Amazon, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Rackspace — compared with 16 last year.

Windows 8: Design Over Usability (MIT Technology Review)
Windows 8 is a computer science masterpiece trapped inside a user interface kerfuffle. Microsoft’s new operating system for phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and servers brims with innovative technologies, bold ideas, and visual elegance. The system’s radical new interface, called Modern, is a pleasure to use on phones and tablets. And although that interface fares poorly on today’s larger desktop computer screens, Windows 8 probably won’t damage the company’s standing in corporate America. It might even shore up its eroding presence on residential desktops and laptops by offering a user experience that’s new, fun, and different from anything offered by Apple and Google. Indeed, that’s my only real criticism of Windows 8: the touch-based user interface is clearly designed for consuming information and having fun, rather than for doing serious work.
