SharePoint 2013 and IBM’s Lame Response (CMSWire)
SharePoint was originally developed as a response, albeit a very weak one, to IBM’s Websphere software, which quickly became the leading enterprise portal solution. However, the mighty Microsoft, never one to rest on its laurels, decided to chase the leader by pouring billions of dollars into SharePoint and has arguably displaced Websphere as the category leader, while IBM has allowed Websphere Portal to plod along with comparably little fanfare, or investment. Microsoft Doesn’t Advise You Customize SharePoint 2013 (CMSWire)
A couple of years ago I wrote here about the dangers of “look and feel fever” when working on SharePoint projects. This is where the UI of a SharePoint implementation is customized, and the client subsequently becomes obsessed with what the system looks like rather than what it offers functionally. It is with this in mind that I noted the SharePoint 2013 announcement on the official Microsoft SharePoint blog. Continue reading this entry »

So SharePoint 2013 has finally been officially announced. The community is now busy downloading the files, firing up virtual machines and evaluating the product. There is lots to be learnt and all kinds of new features to be discovered. What will certainly be interesting is how quickly businesses migrate to the new platform. From my own personal experience, when SharePoint 2010 was released, many clients chose to stay with the current version for a number of months. Will SharePoint 2013 be any more tempting? Open Source Tools Level SharePoint 2010 Collaboration Playing Field (SearchContentManagement)
As the market leader in enterprise collaboration technology, SharePoint gets lots of attention. That speaks not only to the place it holds in the enterprise, but also to the size of the independent software vendor (ISV) community that designs, sells and supports an overwhelming number of add-ons for SharePoint. But while there are many available tools that can expand SharePoint’s collaboration capabilities and fill the gaps in its out-of-the-box functionality, some organizations simply can’t afford them because of budget constraints.
