Increased Productivity Means Focusing on Adoption (AIIM)
Increasing productivity without increasing demand is part of the problem in our current recession, and if you look closely at the data, has been an issue with the US economy for more than a decade. According to Robert Z. Lawrence and Lawrence Edwards in their HBR article Shattering the Myths About US Trade Policy (March 2012), while “many people blame trade for the decline in America’s employment in manufacturing,” the decline in the past decade is equal to the decline we’ve been experiencing over the past 40 years. The authors point out that while “productivity growth has led to lower prices, demand has not grown rapidly enough to prevent a declining trend in employment.”

Breaking Down SharePoint Information Architecture Silos (CMSWire)
Virgil Carroll’s presentation was a perfect conclusion to a fun, informative day at Office 365 Saturday Redmond. Mr. Carroll introduced his talk with the declarative: SharePoint implementations fail more often than succeed because of poor information architecture. He stated, “Information architecture (IA) is a practice, not a strategy. But there is good news. In IA, there’s no such thing as a right answer. There’s only what fits for your organization.”

Windows Server 8: 8 Key Facts (InformationWeek)
Lost in much of the hype around the release last week of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview was the fact that Microsoft also shipped a beta version of Windows Server 8. In many ways, the latter might be more significant for IT organizations, as most businesses will not likely move their PCs to Windows 8 for at least a year or two. Indeed, the majority of businesses haven’t yet moved to Windows 7. But the migration from Windows Server 2008 might be a lot quicker given that Windows Server 8 can jumpstart key initiatives around private, public, and hybrid cloud environments.

Microsoft’s Business Pitch for Windows 8 Depends on Tablets (ZDNet)
Microsoft pitched its Windows 8 case for businesses, but corporations are going to need to hear more to buy into the new operating system. In fact, businesses will need to hear more from their employees than Microsoft and the IT department. CNET News’ Stephen Shankland was on scene in Hanover, Germany as Microsoft operating chief Kevin Turner outlined the business benefits of Windows 8. In a nutshell, Windows 8 is designed to give consumers and corporations what they want. Turner talked about security and the nuances of sideloading apps.

Did Verizon Cancel a Nokia ‘Om’ Windows Phone? (The Verge)
Verizon was originally planning to stock a Nokia Windows Phone 7.5 device in the January timeframe, according to at least one source familiar with the company’s plans. The Nokia device, codenamed Om, was canned by the US carrier following concerns over Windows Phone’s lack of Verizon LTE support. Although it’s not clear whether there were additional issues, Nokia’s Lumia 900 launch with AT&T’s own LTE network may have contributed to Verizon’s decision. Microsoft’s retail stores were poised to stock the device in January and early February, but Verizon appears to have placed its Windows Phone plans on hold until later this year.

SharePoint Gone Wild: When Governance Lacks Discoverability (EndUserSharePoint)
In the series so far, we’ve talked about how accountability, quality, appropriateness and restrictions have all been key drivers for why we need to focus on governance for Microsoft® SharePoint® within our organizations. To continue this series, I want to focus on another key area called Discoverability. What does this term mean? It is the quality of the content being discoverable (able to find information) within SharePoint. Unfortunately, this also happens to be one of the biggest pains within organizations today.

SharePoint Education: Features Detail (Furuknap’s SharePoint Corner)
As part of my research into the SharePoint Protocol documentation, I’ve been particularly keen on learning about a major new feature of SharePoint 2013, namely SharePoint Education. In my ongoing USP Journal subscription series called SharePoint 2013 Beta ($14.95 for the entire series) I posted some initial findings on the SharePoint Education component for the second issue. Over the course of a few blog articles, I’ll repost some of the findings presented in that issue, and even provide some additional insights. I’ve rewritten it slightly but the bulk of the content remains the same.
