I was told not to worry. Wearing the Panda suit is not the only reason I am going to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference. They also want someone to carry boxes of t-shirts… – Dooley

Office 365 vs. Google Docs: End-User Perspective (WindowsITPro)
A lot of the benefits of moving to the cloud are on the back end—such as reduced support costs, simplified storage architecture, and trading up-front costs for long-term expenditures. However, there are numerous benefits to end users, and there’s less of a tradeoff in features than I’d thought. For starters, files are stored in simple web interfaces instead of in obscure shared network drives, and collaboration is easier. Working from multiple machines no longer involves emailing files to yourself. Microsoft and Google are both giving their online office suites a lot of effort—and because these services are in the cloud, there’s no reason the companies can’t update their offerings constantly.
20 Mobile Apps that Belong in Your SPC11 Survival Kit (The SharePoint Muse)
These apps are going to make you a wildly popular and efficient SPC11 party-goer er.. attendee. I tested so many mobile apps and then imagined myself and my tweeps using them. I asked for advice and testing from a select few (@theKicker @Drisgill, thank you for being my willing or unaware participants). The following apps made it into my SPC11 Survival Kit. Lots of tough decisions and some of these are still very new to me so there were a few tough decisions.
Has Steve Ballmer Lost the Support of Microsoft Employees? (Seattle PIT)
At Microsoft’s company meeting on Friday, CEO Steve Ballmer didn’t do his famous monkey dance, he didn’t shout “I love this company” and, when he did speak, many of his employees started emptying out of their Safeco Field seats. At least that’s the image you get by reading employee comments on the latest Mini-Microsoft blog post.
How to Think About Windows on ARM (PC Magazine)
The first time I went to see Microsoft, it was still up in Bellevue, Washington and it employed about 70 people. This is a company that I have followed even closer than Apple over the years and I’ve interacted with almost all of its leaders since 1982. I have even worked on various Microsoft projects from time to time. And as a PC analyst, I was expected to follow all of the company’s moves closely, as they had a major impact on the industry and all of my customers. Consequently, I came to understand clearly every version of Windows, including a few detours like OS2 and the first Pen Computing version of Windows.
How Microsoft’s Windows 8 will Sync Users’ Settings and Apps (ZDNet)
Microsoft officials shared more specifics around the coming ability of Windows 8 to sync user settings and app purchases in a September 26 post on the Building Windows 8 blog. Microsoft revealed at the Build conference that users will be allowed to sign into their Windows 8 PCs using an existing or newly created Windows Live ID. (Signing in this way is not required; it is an option.)
Windows Phone Web Marketplace Goes Live (WinRumors)
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Web Marketplace went live on Tuesday. The web Marketplace is now available to Windows Phone 7 users to discover and purchase applications from within a browser. Windows Phone users will be able to purchase applications and have them charged against the credit card already linked to their Windows Live ID. The Web Marketplace will send an over-the-air SMS or email to Windows Phone devices with a link to the purchased application to make it easy for end users to retrieve their purchases.

Running SharePoint 2010 SP1? – Think Twice Before Removing Database Orphans…For Now (From The Field)
Recently I was troubleshooting an issue with orphans for a customer and whilst attempting to repro the issue in my VM, I noticed a number of SPWeb orphans such as these when running the stsadm –o databaserepair operation. What seemed odd was that the orphans were only SPWeb orphans, and they were on my test rig which was fairly new and had only been used to test a few new features such as those in Service Pack 1. I then noticed that all the SPWeb objects listed were ones that had been deleted during my testing of the new Site Recycle Bin feature.
User Profile Synchronization – Could Not Load File or Assembly ‘Microsoft.ResourceManagement (Liam Cleary [SharePoint MVP])
I have started to see a few issues with SharePoint 2010 environments when trying to access the User Profile Synchronization Service settings in Central Administration. The issue being presented is to do with a mismatch of DLL versions caused by an Update being automatically applied to the SharePoint server. To see if the server has the error, check the version of SharePoint 2010; if it is less than Service Pack and has update KB2560890 applied you will see various errors with Publishing Sites and the User Profile Sync Service. To make sure it is the right error, you will need to make sure that the web.config for the web application has the CallStack=”true” and CustomErrors=”Off”, as well as modifying the web.config in the “_layouts” directory to also be set CustomErrors=”Off”. You should then see the following:
Taking Control of Governance (SharePoint Magazine)
If your engineering team is building your governance plan, you’re doing it wrong. The first mistake you made was ignoring the advice you received from Microsoft, from your consultants, and from the expert community, to build out a governance strategy as part of your overall SharePoint planning. Like flood insurance, most people don’t think about governance until they’re waist-deep in SharePoint sprawl and waking up at night in a cold sweat with change management nightmares. Don’t get me wrong—you probably have really smart administrators and developers who know the technology inside and out. And yet here you are, wondering how you’re going ever to clean up, get things organized, and get your SharePoint environment back on track.
Hitting the Post (AIIM)
Our poor corporate colleagues. Let’s be honest: in this bipolar economy, we’re either furiously implementing an electronic records management system under stressfully high expectations that the company will solicit immediate return on investment or we’re not implementing any system at all. It’s too bad for those of us without resources, because there is so much need. Our colleagues still can’t find their records. You know they’re calling the Help Desk for assistance to locate information on the SharePoint intranet, right? That’s AFTER they’ve spent at least half an hour looking for that file from 2006 that someone is pretty sure they saw posted on the old Accounts Payable team site (there’s a statistic that will help you justify a reorganization of corporate information architecture!). I can hear it now: “it was there three months ago, but since IT changed it, I have no idea where it is now…”
Countdown to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference: A Preview of Bamboo Nation’s Coverage, and More (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As of today, we’re just a week away from the biggest SharePoint event of the year, the Microsoft SharePoint Conference (SPC) in Anaheim, CA. Bamboo is once again a proud sponsor of the SPC, and over a dozen of us will be heading to Anaheim to represent the company. If you’re going to be attending the SPC, be sure to stop by the Bamboo booth (#339), as we’ll be making a major new product announcement at the show (and demos of that new product, as well as other products, will be available upon request), and while you’re there, you’ll certainly want to help yourself to our exclusive SPC 2011 t-shirt.
