Is the Legal Industry Ready for SharePoint? (CMSWire)
Or maybe the more appropriate question should be: is SharePoint ready for legal? The latter is one that I am constantly asked by my clients. Part of the problem in answering that question is that I tend to be a little biased toward SharePoint as the end all be all for an enterprise platform. I’ve built my career on working with SharePoint, and you could say that I’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid for a while now. But as a consultant, my job is not to tell you what the best product is; it’s to tell you what the best product is for your firm’s needs. But before we talk about feature comparison, let’s gain some perspective. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Daily LogoA few weeks ago Chris Wright asked me to help promote his survey on the State of the SharePoint Community. Before I had a chance, several deadlines for the SharePoint Conference and my vacation hit. In the shuffle I completely spaced and never included the links. Sorry Chris, hopefully this will give you a bit of a push in getting more results. More details on what Chris hopes to accomplish are available at NothingButSharePoint.  –Chris

If You Must have In-house Social Tools, Go with SharePoint (InfoWorld)
I’ve spent the past week working with and deploying the various social networking tools in SharePoint 2010. It’s jam-packed with everything from individual blog sites and profiles to simple I Like It and Tags & Notes options at the top of every page. Microsoft believes that by adding these features, IT can keep folks on its intranet and thus increase communication and collaboration within an organization. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Daily LogoI’m baaaack. OK, first I have to get a bit of whining out of the way. I take off one week and we have an earthquake, catch the edge of a hurricane and I got a really nasty cold (thanks Emily).  I’m starting to think vacations are a bit overrated. So, did I miss anything good? You guys need to help me get caught up.  –Chris

The 5 Teams You Need for Effective SharePoint Governance (CMSWire)
In this article, I give you some practical structure and tactics you can use to achieve effective SharePoint governance. In football, how effective and successful will a team be at winning if it doesn’t have structured sub-teams? Imagine a football team with no defensive line, offensive line or special teams. What if sometimes the quarterback played the role of wide receiver, linebacker or kicker? How effective would that team be? What if the team had no planned plays, never practiced those plays and had no coaches or clear direction? Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Daily LogoHappy Friday!!! It has been quite a while since I had more than a long weekend out of the office, so (after a being threatened by my manager) I have decided it is time for a week of vacation. Right now my plans include sleeping late and staying up late and maybe an afternoon nap or three. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Three Steps to Creating a Successful SharePoint 2010 Deployment Plan (Search Content Management)
Smaller organizations launching SharePoint 2010 often take a very casual approach to the deployment process. They purchase some licenses and install SharePoint without any real plan for its long-term use, letting the deployment evolve over time. While that might work fine for a small company, such a laissez-faire attitude toward SharePoint 2010 deployment can have severe long-term consequences in an enterprise environment. To avoid trouble, enterprise-class organizations would be well-advised to develop a comprehensive strategy long before the first SharePoint license is purchased. Continue reading this entry »

We’ve Got SharePoint…Now What? 4 Next Steps (CMSWire)
It is now a well-known fact in business circles that SharePoint has become the standard for portals, document management, search and BI. While there are many ways to configure and implement a SharePoint instance, the question of how to compile and engage a team still remains. Furthermore, questions of what best practices and standards should be part of an implementation are seemingly never asked, or answered. In speaking with executives and teams about their SharePoint projects, many of our clients have similar stories to share — that senior executives choose SharePoint for the new corporate portal or to house document management, and then announce to their “team” that SharePoint is coming to the organization, without doing their planning or diligence on the “team” itself. This strategy has obvious issues, which, can be overcome with the right level of mid-implementation planning, training and consulting. Continue reading this entry »

Migrating Documents From a Legacy DMS to SharePoint (Law Technology News)
There’s been a great deal of interest in converting legacy document management systems to Microsoft SharePoint in the legal industry and beyond. Compelling reasons for doing so include reduced costs, robust API, broad third-party support, as well as tools for integrating SharePoint with other firm systems. To date, the discussion has focused principally on the suitability of SharePoint as a DMS, on the compatibility of SharePoint with common third-party add-ons — such as those for standard forms generation, metadata stripping, or document comparison — on security, and on the need to support ethical walls. While more remains to be done, significant progress has been made in addressing these concerns. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint, eContent and the GRC Challenge (CMSWire)
Every time an employee innocently sends a forgotten password to a co-worker over the system, every time an HR staffer forwards a resume to a hiring manager, every time a website content writer posts a new blog entry with an old brand mark — there’s a question of violation of GRC rules. The Shattered Web: Just a few years ago, the term “eContent” would have been dismissed as a typo. Today, it’s a term that almost every organization has to deal with. With the enterprise moving online to a greater and greater extent, companies are finding enhanced efficiencies in electronic documents and collaborative workflow — creating a new kind of management challenge.
