Making The Case for Running SharePoint in Parallel (InformationWeek)
JP Morgan Chase is one of the largest financial institutions in the world, with 200,000 employees in 60 countries around the globe. Mike Aaron Brown is senior project manager for the company’s centralized applications and shared services and is one of the key people driving JP Morgan Chase’s internal collaboration, intranet, global search, and social strategy. The JP Morgan Chase story is a familiar one, with a lot of SharePoint 2007 installed to support individual group and project collaboration throughout the business. Because of the company’s sheer size and global, its SharePoint implementation has accumulated over 4,000 site collections in a massive, centralized SharePoint farm.

Office 365 vs. Google Apps: Advantage Microsoft (InformationWeek)
Google is far from the only rival to Microsoft Office 365, but it is the biggest Web-only option. Here’s are the key areas where each vendor shines (for more details, see informationweek.com/ 1305/office365).

Microsoft Add Real-Time Collaboration to Office Web Application (CMSWire)
Last year, Microsoft introduced Office Web Apps in a response to competition from browser-based productivity tools such as the popular Google Docs. Although the initial release allowed collaboration for Excel and OneNote, it did not support simultaneous editing of Microsoft Word or PowerPoint files — two of the most popular applications in the suite. Prior to the most recent enhancement, users who wanted real-time document collaborative document editing, like what has long been available in Google Docs, had to purchase the more feature-rich desktop version of the software.

Cloud Move Was ‘Scary,’ Ballmer Tells WPC Attendees (RedmondMag)
The 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference kicked off today with a talk by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who recounted his concerns that partners might not have stayed as the company gravitated to the Internet cloud. “Last year’s WPC was, for me, scary,” Ballmer explained on Monday morning during his keynote address at the conference, which runs through Thursday. Ballmer confessed to being very afraid at the 2010 WPC, which is when the company asserted its “all in” commitment to the cloud with partners.

Ballmer: Windows Phone 7 Not Successful Yet (ComputerWorld)
While Microsoft has enjoyed many successes over the past year, Windows Phone 7 hasn’t been among them, admitted Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer during the opening keynote Monday at the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, being held this week in Los Angeles. Ballmer took time to celebrate some of the successes the company has had over the past year, such as the success of Microsoft Office and Windows 7. He did display some modesty in admitting that the company did not make major in-roads with Windows Phone 7. “In a year, we’ve gone from very small to … very small,” he said, referring to the market share that the phone operating system has made since its introduction last year.

Microsoft: 400 Million Windows 7 and 100 Million Office 2010 Licenses Sold (and More Partner Conference Stats) (ZDNet)
Microsoft’s Day 1 keynote from the Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angeles didn’t feature much product news. But there were a lot of stats thrown at the 12,000 or so partners in attendance on July 11. I’ve rounded up the claims from CEO Steve Ballmer, Windows/Windows Live CFO Tammi Reller and Partner Chief Jon Roskill here:

Microsoft: Buy Windows 7 Today, Keep Same PC for Windows 8 Upgrade (ComputerWorld)
Any computer running Windows 7 will be upgradable to Windows 8, Microsoft said today while pledging to keep hardware requirements level or even lower when the next version of Windows comes out. Microsoft says it has sold more than 400 million Windows 7 licenses, but Windows XP is still nearly twice as commonly used worldwide. Yet Microsoft has already shown two technical previews of Windows 8, and announced today that a further preview of Windows 8 is coming in September. Therefore, Microsoft has a balancing act to convince businesses and consumers to upgrade to Windows 7 despite the promise of a new operating system around the corner.

New Videos Show How to do a Database Attach Upgrade (To the SharePoint)
The process for performing a database attach upgrade can seem complicated. We thought it might be nice to give you a visual overview of the process and demonstrate the steps involved in video format. SharePoint 2010 Backup and Recovery: Configuring Restore (SharePoint Magazine)
The first part of this mini-series on configuring SharePoint 2010 backup and restore focused on the backup part. This part will introduce the basic setup for performing SharePoint 2010 restores. In this article, we will address mainly the PowerShell approach, showing that this is the most complete and flexible approach when it comes to restore operations. All the PowerShell restore operations address well the flexible granularity of SharePoint 2010 restores, allowing farm-level, web/service application-level, and site collection/list/library-level restores. However, we will also explore how the SQL Server tools can be used to back up and restore content databases. But first things first: let’s start with the initial configuration settings for restoring.

How to Change the App Pool ID of a SharePoint 2010 Web Application (Todd Klindt’s SharePoint Admin Blog)
Over the course of a week I look at a lot of SharePoint systems. One of the common problems I see with SharePoint 2010 systems too many application pools; both for web apps and service apps. How many is too many, you ask? Microsoft says more than 10 is not supported. Personally, I think all of your service applications should share one app pool, and all of your web applications should share another app pool. Of course there are exceptions to that, but I use the 1 app pool rule as a starting point. I see a lot of farms where each web app has its own service apps, and that’s just unnecessary. In most cases it serves no purpose, and only complicates your farm. Sharing application pools, however, has many benefits.

Search Crawls Won’t Complete (Social-Point)
This post should also be titled “My Penalty for not Reading ALL the Instructions“. As it turns out, when you install the Service Pack 1 for SharePoint Server (first Foundation, then Server) – you are required to run the configuration wizard on your own at the end of the process.  I can only assume this is because a reboot is required after each patch application.  Here is the error that first caught my attention in the Event Viewer (EventID 69):

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: How to Open & Close a Popup Window Using the OpenPopUpPageWithTitle Method (SharePoint 2010)
Using JavaScript, there are a variety of different methods to open a URL in a popup dialog in SharePoint 2010 . In this article, we will talk about how to open a popup using one of these methods, OpenPopUpPageWithTitle, and how to refresh the page after returning from the popup. Challenge: How do I open a popup using the OpenPopUpPageWithTitle method, and refresh the page after returning from the popup?
