Inside SharePoint 2010, Part 2: Internet Web Sites (SuperSite For Windows)
SharePoint is widely lauded for its sites-based intranet and extranet capabilities, which allow users to share virtually anything with coworkers, partners, and others. Less well known, however, is SharePoint’s related functionality for managing and publishing publically-facing Internet web sites. And even those who have explored this area in the past will find that SharePoint 2010 (and SharePoint Online, part of Office 365) has dramatically improved Internet site capabilities, in response to customer requests. This isn’t your father’s SharePoint. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Daily LogoRumor has it that SharePoint is going away. If you don’t buy into that idea and are in Chicago today for SharePoint Fest, stop by the Bamboo booth and say Hi to Matt. If you don’t have any SharePoint questions, Matt is always happy to grab a pizza and talk about the latest episode of “90210″. Most of us refuse to talk 90210 with him, so it would make his day if you did. :-D  –Chris

SharePoint in the Cloud (SYS-CON Media)
As customers continue their march to the cloud we have heard from a large number who want to use SharePoint Server in the cloud. Two major concerns that show up frequently are migration of existing custom deployments and data security. These organizations have spent years customizing their SharePoint deployments so they work just right in their environment, and moving to the cloud is a daunting proposition. Consider a scenario where a customer has deployed SharePoint and each department has its own intranet and individual sites for employees – the proliferation of these sites across organizations and the customization required has created a situation where customers typically stay away from using the cloud for their existing SharePoint deployments and start from scratch in the cloud. Microsoft 4Q Profit Climbs, Windows Revenue Dips (Bloomberg Businessweek)
Microsoft Corp. reported record fourth-quarter revenue Thursday, helped by strong sales of its Office software suite. Investors still seem concerned about the world’s largest software maker’s growth prospects, however, as consumers buy fewer computers that run its Windows software. While all of the company’s other business units posted growth in the April-June period, revenue from the division that includes Microsoft’s Windows operating system fell 1 percent from the same time last year — its third-straight quarter of decline. Your SharePoint Records Governance Plan & ISO 15489: Disaster Preparation & Recovery (CMSWire)
ISO 15489 barely mentions disaster preparation and recovery outright. In fact, the most extensive statement on this topic in ISO 15489 appears in the Technical Report (Part Two): “Risk management also involves development of a disaster recovery plan that defines an organized and prioritized response to the disaster, planning for the continuance of regular business operations during the disaster and making appropriate plans for recovery after the disaster.” Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft’s Office 365 Could Validate Cloud Strategy (eWeek)
For quite some time now, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his executives have been touting an “all in” strategy regarding the cloud. That strategy predicts a gradual transition from desktop-based software to online subscription services, with businesses eventually paying a set amount per month to store their data and launch applications from Microsoft’s servers. In theory, this benefits businesses by reducing the need for on-premises servers and other IT infrastructure (and spares them the sometimes onerous process of updating their own software, since those updates are ported over the cloud). It also benefits Microsoft by turning customers into monthly subscribers, ensuring a steady revenue stream. Continue reading this entry »
