SharePoint & the iPad, a Tale of Two Platforms (CMSWire)
It is the best of times, it is the age of the iPad, and cloud computing. It’s the epoch of multi touch, of swipe and tap. According to Gartner, tablets sales this year will reach more than 50 million units, and more than 100 by 2012. When compared to the 19.7 million sold in 2010 (also according to Gartner) the figures speak for themselves. Of course if you use SharePoint 2010, you might not be as excited. Here’s a look at your options for using SharePoint on the iPad. Continue reading this entry »

I am starting to think that little things like privacy and security are things of the past. I’ve lost track of how many emails I have received over the last few weeks saying that my email address may have been stolen. The PlayStation Network was hacked and info was stolen. Microsoft, Google and Apple have all admitted that our phones may or may not be tracking us (depending on who you talk to). My bank has mailed me new debit cards at least 3 times last year due to possible security issues. Maybe I should make things easier for the hackers and start publishing all my info at the end of every Daily post. [:P] /whining — Chris

Collaboration: Far More than Just a Buzzword (CFO World)
Procurement departments are the front line gatekeepers to many software vendors seeking to sell their solutions to an organisation. Ask a procurement agent if managing software vendors is difficult, and he or she will reply that the most challenging, yet insulting, aspect is that most vendors scatter industry buzzwords without much appreciation of their true meaning. For example, the word ‘synergy’ has been copied from movies into the business world to confuse issues or to create an appearance of intelligence on the part of software vendors. Microsoft to Fill SharePoint Gaps with Office 365 App Store (ComputerWorld)
As Microsoft looks to bring SharePoint customers to the cloud, one challenge will be providing a robust set of tools through the newly announced Office 365 Marketplace. The app store — though not officially called an “app store” due to a pending dispute with Apple — launched in beta this month with 100 applications and 400 professional services from Microsoft partners. The apps and services are available for Exchange, Lync, Office and SharePoint, but SharePoint is the real key for the app store, suggests Gartner analyst Mark Gilbert. Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft’s Own Numbers Suggest Declining Windows Market Share (InfoWorld)
Last summer, Microsoft announced that it had sold 175,000,000 Windows 7 licenses through the end of June 2010. Cranking together a few numbers produced some surprising results, which I talked about in my July 26, 2010, article “Do the math: 175 million copies of Windows 7 isn’t that impressive.” Last Friday, Brandon LeBlanc said the following on the Windows Team Blog: “18 months ago to this day was when we launched Windows 7 and with that we’ve hit another important milestone: we are pleased to announce that Windows 7 has sold more than 350 million licenses. The momentum we’ve seen and continue to see with Windows 7 is incredible.” Continue reading this entry »

Why the Office 365 Beta is Worth Testing (ZDNet)
It’s hard to review any e-mail or productivity platform without actually using it. And by “using it,” I don’t mean “installing some beta code and banging on it for a few hours.” I mean using it, day in and day out, in a production environment, duplicating the volume and type of work you normally do. That explains why I’m not reviewing Office 365 this week, despite the fact that I’ve had access to an account for several months, including a one-week head start on the rest of the population for the just-released beta. By my own definition, I haven’t banged on it enough to give you an honest buy/don’t buy decision. Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft Office 365 Beta Opens for Business: What’s Inside (ComputerWorld)
Now anyone can try Office 365, Microsoft’s cloud productivity package for businesses. The service opened Sunday night for beta testing, coming a step closer to its final launch, which will occur sometime later this year. Office 365 is built to entice small and large companies that want to stop handling many IT chores in-house and instead entrust the heavy lifting to Microsoft’s servers. This bundle of always-on online services ties in to Office software and is meant to enable access to work, contacts, and calendars from your desktop and mobile devices, including Windows Phone 7, Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones. Friday randomness… Normally April 15 is tax day in the US, but this year it seems we get an extra three days. Today is the last day to submit your donation receipts for Operation ShareLove. I’m not sure what time the voting closes but today is also the last day to vote in the Andy Dale SharePoint Awards. That’s a lot to do in one day. I’ll probably get grief for this, but I think Rebecca Black said it best with her lyric “It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta get down on Friday.” –Chris

Collaboration Software: Top Collaboration Apps (TMCnet)
Internet-fueled network computing has wrought such profound effects on business communications during the last decade that it’s easy to overlook the continuing innovation in software designed to facilitate collaborative work. Collaboration software is defined as software that is designed to help people involved in a common task achieve their goals and is usually associated with individuals not physically co-located, but instead working together across an internet connection. It can also include remote access storage systems for archiving common use data files that can be accessed, modified and retrieved by the distributed workgroup members.
