Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office: Threat to Microsoft SharePoint? (PCWorld)
In a blog post, Google has announced Cloud Connect, a plugin for Microsoft Office. In some ways, its shared/collaborative features go beyond what Microsoft itself officially offers with SharePoint Server. With this plugin, you can now share, backup and simultaneously edit Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents with co-workers without the need for sending attachments back and forth. HP and Microsoft Roll Out Appliances (Redmond Channel Partner)
Hewlett-Packard Co. and Microsoft have unveiled five appliances that offer Exchange and SQL Server in turnkey configurations. The two companies’ offerings range from a so-called “private cloud in a box” designed to virtualize databases to a $2 million data warehouse appliance. ANALYSIS: SharePoint, the New Way Forward for Document Management? (Legal Business Online)
Well informed law firms around the Asia-Pacific are keeping a close eye on Clifford Chance and Microsoft’s recently announced business relationship – to develop a document management system (DMS) based on the latter’s SharePoint suite of products. The usual DMS functions – storage, version control, auditing and sharing of documents will operate using SharePoint under the new system. Clifford Chance has spent at least 1m; Microsoft – reportedly happy with being associated with one the world’s largest law firms – is providing funding. The fundamental point of difference between the new system and conventional document management software is that one shared platform will be used to provide all of the abovementioned services as well as functions related to intranet and client access to documents. W3C: HTML5 Spec Due in 2014 (eWeek)
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has established a more defined timeline for the HTML5 specification, shooting for May 2011 as the last call date and a final full spec by 2014. The W3C extended the charter of the HTML Working Group with clear milestones for HTML5, the cornerstone of W3C’s Open Web Platform for application development. Coming in May 2014, the “Last Call” phase of the HTML5 spec proffers an invitation to communities inside and outside the W3C to confirm the technical soundness of the specification. The group will then shift focus to gathering implementation experience. The W3C is developing a comprehensive test suite to achieve broad interoperability for the full specification by 2014, the target date for Recommendation, the W3C said in a press release. IE9 RC Shockingly Fast, Firefox 4 Beta Stuck (ConceivablyTech)
The release of IE9 RC this past week was reason enough for us to have a quick look at the state of the current batch of beta web browsers. We knew that IE9 Beta was fast, but the RC adds a huge punch in hardware accelerated disciplines and distances its rivals far enough to win the overall performance crown.
