The Road to Microsoft Office 365: The Past (ZDNet)
I’m kicking off today a three-part series about Microsoft’s Office 365, the company’s software-as-a-service offering. When Microsoft announced its plans for Office 365 in October of this year, few were cognizant of the five-plus years of groundwork that preceded the launch of its hosted-application platform. Few also seemed to understand why and how Microsoft is attempting to coalesce its varied hosted app offerings under a single brand and infrastructure. I’m hoping with this series to explain the past, present and future of one of the most important elements of Microsoft’s cloud strategy. Continue reading this entry »

Is Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Right For SMBs? (InformationWeek)
Small and midsize businesses (SMBs) are downloading, trying, and adopting Microsoft’s SharePoint technology, the core bits of which are included as part of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server. But is SharePoint really designed for SMBs? A spokesman from Microsoft admitted that SharePoint adoption is higher among larger organizations than for SMBs. “Today, we’re probably skewed toward the enterprise,” says Richard Riley, group product manager on Microsoft’s SharePoint team. Microsoft Lync Could Enhance SharePoint 2010 (Fierce Content Management)
Microsoft recently released Lync, its new unified communications server, which was formerly known as Office Communications Server. The new release attempts to bring all kinds of communications under a single umbrella including social information like location, activity stream, and a contact card with picture. While all of this is interesting from a broad enterprise communications level, it also has implications for SharePoint users. In a recent blog post, on the Microsoft SharePoint Team blog, SharePoint GM Eric Swift outlined some of the advantages of using Lync with SharePoint. Continue reading this entry »

Microsoft and Google Launch New Assaults on the Cloud (InfoWorld)
Not since the early ’90s, when IBM fought its last stand against Microsoft for the desktop, have we seen anything like the epic battle between Microsoft and Google for the cloud. On Friday we witnessed this conflict in microcosm at InfoWorld’s offices. Microsoft representatives stopped by in the morning to demo an early beta version of Office 365, the company’s bundle of Office Professional Plus 2010 with cloud-based versions of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync. That afternoon, Google representatives popped in to demo Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, a free add-on that allows existing versions of Microsoft Office (2003 and up) to sync Office documents with Google Docs and engage in simultaneous group editing. SharePoint Private Cloud – Socializing Enterprise Applications (Sys-con)
The reason I think the Cloud market will experience such a huge boom is that it will be accompanied by other equally powerful IT trends. Indeed they will magnify the benefit of one another, and these overlaps are the ideal sweet spots to provide the context and opportunity for new start-ups. The overlap between Cloud Computing and an Enterprise 2.0 strategy of ‘socializing enterprise apps’ is this type of focus for our ‘LiveWIRE’ Cloud Venture, a new toolset that overlays across Microsoft SharePoint and offers the secret sauce potential to dramatically increase sales of hosted SharePoint offerings. How to Save Money by Replacing Microsoft SharePoint with WordPress (CTO Edge)
According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 99.7 percent of all U.S. businesses and employ about half of all private sector employees. This makes sense, since the definition of a “small” business is pretty big: “an independent business having fewer than 500 employees.” Have you ever been in a crowd of 500 people? Living in NYC all my life, I have, and I can tell you it’s pretty nerve wracking at times (think crammed train during rush hour). Continue reading this entry »
