Microsoft`s Windows Phone 7 Strategy: 10 Mistakes It Can Still Fix (eWeek)
Microsoft is preparing to launch Windows Phone 7. The software is expected to be available on several different devices from a number of vendors. And it will likely deliver a more iOS-like experience than any other mobile operating system Microsoft has ever released. But with its impending release comes several questions. Windows Phone 7 looks like a better operating system, but it’s still rife with holes that could potentially derail the software before it even has a chance to compete. And let’s not forget that Microsoft has left out several key features that could prove extremely troublesome for its operating system once it’s made available.
Ballmer: The Demise of Microsoft Should Be a Very Difficult Thing to Have Happen (Softpedia)
Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer believes that the death of Microsoft is highly improbable. During a Q&A at the London School of Economics in London, England on October 5, 2010, Ballmer noted that the Redmond company would have to start performing extremely poorly in order to fail. He revealed that while the software giant virtually holds its future in its own hands, the future is not guaranteed in any way.
Rumors About IE’s Death Are Greatly Exaggerated (ConceivablyTech)
If you quote statistics, it is always a good idea to tell the entire story, as you expose yourself to inconvenient questions. We frequently criticize Microsoft for its uncomfortably biased blogging about growing IE market shares, and it may have received a dose of the opposite bias this week. But it was exactly this bias that opened the door to a decent IE marketing opportunity and Microsoft strangely missed out on it, by choosing to simply ignore those reports. Whatever the reason for this decision was, and as much as we believe that Microsoft isn’t promoting IE in the right way, we also believe that it is highly unlikely that IE is dying.
W3C: Hold Off on HTML5 in Websites (Network World)
HTML5, which updates the HTML specification to accommodate modern Web applications, has gained a lot of adherents in vendors like Microsoft, Google, and Apple. But the specification is plain not ready yet for deployment to websites, an official with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees HTML5, stressed this week.
Microsoft Office Web Apps has 20 Million Users (Seattle Times)
Office Web Apps, Microsoft’s competitor to Google Docs, has 20 million users. Betsy Webb, general manager of Microsoft Online Services, said that many people have used the free Web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the first 100 days after it launched this year. This puts Office Web Apps not too far behind Google, which says 25 million people use Google Docs and Apps.
Microsoft’s Ballmer to Invest Billions in Cloud Data Centers (Bloomberg Businessweek)
Microsoft Corp. will invest “billions” in data centers to handle increased use of cloud services, where information and software are stored remotely and accessed over the Internet, Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said. “The good news is that the cost of data centers is coming down,” Ballmer said at a joint press conference with Deutsche Telekom AG CEO Rene Obermann in Cologne, Germany today. Deutsche Telekom is investing about 700 million euros ($971 million) to 800 million euros in data centers every year, said Obermann.
Microsoft Pitches PC Isolation Ward to Defeat Botnets (Computerworld)
Microsoft’s security chief Wednesday pitched a plan that would block some botnet-infected computers from connecting to the Internet. A noted botnet researcher said the proposal didn’t attack the problem at its root, and like many technical solutions, was unlikely to do much good.
10 Lessons for Gov 2.0 from Web 2.0 (O’Reilly Radar)
What is Web 2.0? In 2005, it meant geeks embracing a set of principles and practices: using the web as a platform, harnessing collective intelligence, data is the new “Intel inside,” and others. By 2010, many of the dominant companies and services that embody or fuel Web 2.0 have become global brands: Google, Craigslist, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, and a host of new mobile communities or platforms. These companies are often defined by what they allow users to do: upload pictures or video, stay connected to friends, track and discover news, save bookmarks, create communities, etc.

Project Management With SharePoint Task Lists (EndUserSharePoint)
Like many law firms, project management is finding its way into the lexicon of attorneys and staff at Fenwick & West. Driven by clients’ desire for more predictable legal costs, law firms are beginning to look beyond the billable hour to alternative fee arrangements. While AFAs can take many forms, they share one thing in common — they transfer the risk of cost overruns from the client to the firm.

Where are Assemblies in Sandboxed Solutions Deployed? (Microsoft SharePoint Developer Documentation Team Blog)
Because sandboxed solutions cannot deploy files to a server’s file system, there is some puzzlement over where the assemblies in sandboxed solutions are deployed and persisted. The situation is not helped by the fact that the package manifest of a sandboxed solution implies that such assemblies are deployed to the GAC as the following screenshot shows. This is not the case.
SharePoint: It’s Everywhere, but What to Make of It (Formtek Blog)

Different reports made by AIIM this year find that anywhere from 74 percent to 98 percent of organizations are planning to try SharePoint. But how are organizations using it?
