Is SharePoint 2010 a Compliant Records Solution? (IDM)
Microsoft SharePoint has changed the game on traditional Enterprise Content Management (ECM) vendors. Whilst this might now be old news for many in the ECM industry, what may be more surprising is just how many organisations are already using SharePoint 2007 for records management purposes and the huge number of organisations who have expressed their intention to use SharePoint 2010. This is in spite of a considerable section of the Records Management industry expressing concerns that SharePoint 2007 is not compliant with ISO 15489.
How Microsoft Crowdsourced the Making of Office 2010 (Wired)
For several years, Denise Carlevato has studied millions of mouse clicks and keystrokes made by anonymous computer users from all over the world. Her objective: to make Microsoft Office better fit the way millions of people work. Months before Microsoft rolled out the latest version of its productivity suite, Office 2010, 9 million people downloaded its beta version to test the software and provide feedback. As part of the program, Microsoft collected 2 million comments from beta testers. An additional 600 people participated in Microsoft’s Virtual Research Lab, where Carlevato and her colleagues could observe how people were using new features.
Microsoft: Azure’s Showing Business Allure (CNET)
Microsoft’s cloud-computing push, Windows Azure, was only launched six months ago and while it is still early days for the technology, Azure has already attracted thousands of users and could prove central to the software giant’s technology plans.
Windows Phone 7 in Trouble? MeeGo DOA? (InfoWorld)
If I believed in conspiracy theories, I’d say that Windows Phone 7 is a failure six months before its expected availability. And the Nokia-Intel MeeGo operating system will be dead on arrival, if it’s ever released. Let’s start with Windows Phone 7. Touted earlier this year as the successor to the much unloved Windows Mobile platform, Microsoft has gone largely silent on Windows Phone 7 since then, all but ignoring its great hope to stave off the iPhone at its recent TechEd conference. (And according to a recent CNET report, Microsoft is sticking with its earlier decision not to include copy and paste — sheesh!) In the meantime, Microsoft has announced three other mobile operating systems.
Microsoft Calls Out Google Over Docs Support (ChannelWeb)
Microsoft and Google have been squabbling over which company’s products offer the best value for customers, and now Microsoft has opened a new front in the battle: customer support. Microsoft says it has a long history of delivering support by phone and e-mail as well as through online community sites like Microsoft Answers, which is staffed by Microsoft MVP partners. Google, in contrast, doesn’t offer much in the way of support to its customers, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft Admires How Apple Products ‘Just Work’ (ChannelWeb)
Microsoft has zeroed in on what makes Apple products so popular that people will wait hours in line just for a chance to purchase them. But will this realization be reflected in the next version of Windows, or just used as a compass for product development down the road?
The Need for Real Security in a Virtual World (ComputerWorld)
In a recent column, my counterpart, Mathias Thurman, wrote about securing virtual desktop environments. My company is going through the same exercise of evaluating VDI as a replacement for traditional desktops. As Mathias pointed out, the concept of virtualising the applications that run on the system does not substantially change the threat landscape, nor does it modify the countermeasures we put in place to protect against those threats.

Understanding and Troubleshooting SharePoint 2010 Technology Features and Services (Get the Point)
Out of the proverbial box, SharePoint 2010 provides a plethora of features and services. You could say: “A feature is just a feature and a service is just a service”. But when that SharePoint feature needs to be activated and that SharePoint service must be started, then they move to the top of the list. And did you know there are at least 94 SharePoint features and services in a fully-configured SharePoint installation?
SharePoint 2010 – Ajax Panel in Web Part’s Editor Part (SharePoint Blues)
Have you ever wanted to have conditional property setting possibilities in your custom web parts? I have. The scenario has been that I would have wanted to render a control to web part property setting based on some other property selection – i.e. if user selects something from web part’s properties, something else would emerge to be selected from or filled in. When developing over SharePoint 2007 I had an idea how to do it with Ajax but never had the time to make it happen as in SharePoint 2007 you wouldn’t have ASP.NET 3.5 and Ajax web server extensions available in your web application by default.
