SharePoint 2010 Offers More for Both IT and Users (eWeek)
Microsoft’s SharePoint Server 2010 offers easier upgrading and better management tools; administrators and users will both find much to like about the company’s third try at a comprehensive collaboration platform. They say that nothing’s new under the sun, and ordinarily, I agree with that sentiment. But in this line of work, one is occasionally treated to a surprise, and Microsoft’s SharePoint Server 2010 qualifies as one of the more pleasant surprises of this year.
SharePoint 2010: Using Retention Stages to Manage the Lifecycle of Information (CMS Wire)
The information your organization generates doesn’t necessarily stay relevant forever. Which is why it’s important to have an information management strategy. SharePoint 2010 includes some improvements in the area of managing information using Retention Stages.
Microsoft Office vs. Google Apps: The Business Brawl (NetworkWorld)
In the business battle to rule the enterprise office suite of the future, Microsoft and Google both must overcome significant problems. On Google’s side, despite the Google Apps price advantage and Google’s announcement that 2 million companies are now using Google Apps, various research data still shows Google is losing out in the enterprise. Google Apps adoption not only lags way behind Microsoft but also trails behind OpenOffice and even IBM’s Lotus Symphony. Estimated revenue for Google Apps in 2009 is $50 million, a tiny portion of the company’s $22 billion war chest.
Google: Don’t Upgrade Office, Add Docs (CNET)
On the eve of the business launch of Office 2010, Google is arguing that there is a better way for businesses to upgrade their productivity suite. Instead of paying Redmond for the new version, Google argues businesses would be better off using the version of Office they have and mixing in Google Docs to get their dose of collaboration and Web-based tools.
Is the Private Cloud an Oxymoron? (Computer World)
The IT community is now strongly focusing on the impact of cloud computing on their businesses. This can largely be explained by the fact that the rapid growth in the use of cloud services in recent years massively disrupts traditional IT delivery models. But there remains much confusion regarding the nature, scope and definition of cloud computing. The situation is becoming cloudier (excuse the pun) as major IT suppliers start to re-brand existing offerings as ‘private clouds’.
Windows 7 ‘Compatibility Checker’ Is a Trojan (PCWorld)
Scammers are infecting computers with a Trojan horse program disguised as software that determines whether PCs are compatible with Windows 7. The attack was first spotted by BitDefender on Sunday and is not yet widespread; the antivirus vendor is receiving reports of about three installs per hour from its users in the U.S. But because the scam is novel, it could end up infecting a lot of people, according to Catalin Cosoi, the head of BitDefender’s Online Threats Lab. “This actually works because of the interest in Windows 7,” he said.

SP2010: Where’s My Search Center? (John Ross)
As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been heads down doing a lot of “stuff” – a large portion of that stuff was dedicated to working with SharePoint 2010 search. It didn’t take long for me to notice that there’s been some fundamental changes to things. I’m not saying this as a negative – in fact I think there’s a lot of positives here but SharePoint 2010 takes a slightly different approach to some search basics. I’ve dealt with users long enough to know that small changes can cause some confusion so I hope to clarify things with this post.
Common Problem with SharePoint 2010: System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException – Keyset Does Not Exist (Stefan Goßner)
SharePoint 2010 has a new feature which recycles the OWSTIMER.EXE process every night – similar to the application pool functionality in IIS – to avoid memory problems inside the timer service. The recycling is controlled by a new timer job which has been added in SharePoint 2010: the “Timer Service Recycle” job which per default runs once a day at 6 AM.
SharePoint 2010 User Profile Sync & Reboots (harbar.net)
Since I published my article, Rational Guide to implementing SharePoint Server 2010 User Profile Synchronization, I’ve been deluged with email on the topic. All good, it shows me that I chose the right content to post, and that the content has relevance. However one key aspect keeps coming up over and over again both in these emails and on IM etc. Lots of people after attempting to provision the UPS Service from Services on Server, need to reboot the server before the service is provisioned correctly.
CRM, SharePoint and Social Media: How to Accelerate Your Success (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Last Thursday was a day for which I had waited with great anticipation; finally, the 4City Tour would arrive in Washington, D.C. This tour was produced and Platinum-sponsored by our partner, C5Insight, and Consultedge. The event also featured Gold Sponsor Ad Tran, and Bamboo was a Silver Sponsor. Thursday’s one-day event, which drew around 85 attendees, was free to registrants and was held in the Westin at Tyson’s Corner.
