Microsoft: Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 Released to Manufacturing (ZDNet)
At the end of the day on April 16, Microsoft officials said Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 were released today to manufacturing. According to the company, more than 7.5 million people have downloaded the beta of the “2010 set of products” for the PC, mobile phone and browser. That’s more than three times the number of individuals who tested Office 2007, company officials said in a post to the Office 2010 Engineering blog.
First Impressions: SharePoint 2010 for Law Firms (Law.com)
SharePoint 2010 will bring significant changes that will likely be both empowering and disruptive for law firm users and technical staff. Unlike SharePoint 2007, which was released when SharePoint adoption levels were still low, the 2010 release finds its predecessor with over 100 million licenses sold and well entrenched in law firms of all sizes. Upgrading to SharePoint 2010 will therefore have a significant impact on both firm users and clients.
MSDN, TechNet Get Office 2010 this Week (ComputerWorld)
Subscribers to Microsoft’s developer and IT professional services are first in line to get Office 2010, which will be released to MSDN and TechNet on Thursday, the company has confirmed. MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) and TechNet subscribers can download the production versions of Office 2010 starting April 22, five days before volume license customers with Software Assurance will be able to obtain the new application suite.
Office 2010 RTM Reached and Leaked, Next Month Launch (Blogsdna)
The next generation of Microsoft Office Software has reached the gold mark. The Microsoft Office
Team has announced just before the weekend that Office 2010 is RTM status. With this brings a couple of different dates to follow. First off Office 2010 will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on April 22th, which looks like is this Thursday. Now the Global Office 2010 Virtual Launch event will be on May 12th, and users around the world can follow the event live virtual event at http://www.the2010event.com. Also on this date, Microsoft will start shipping Office 2010 to its business customers. Although just before this event Microsoft’s Volume License customers will be able to download copies of Office 2010 on April 27th. They will be able to download the products in English via the Volume Licensing Service Center.
Microsoft’s Fix it Center Helps Users Solve Windows Problems (CNET)
Microsoft is testing a new “Fix it Center”–an online and PC-based tool for helping users solve their Windows technical problems. While a fair amount of diagnostics are built into Windows 7, the free Fix it Center aims to expand on these and also bring similar capabilities to Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Is Apple Readying for a Rematch with Microsoft in Personal Computing? (Mobile Beat)
Pundits are declaring mobile the new PC. The number of mobile phones far outstrips the number of desktops. Mobile phones are available to people in the developing world who never had an opportunity to buy or even use a PC. With phones becoming smarter, there will be even less need for people to own PCs. Microsoft has dominated the PC-based world ever since it drove Apple close to extinction in the mid ’90s. But with Apple’s strong footing in mobile, its recent release of a larger, tablet form factor, iPad, also based on its mobile iPhone OS, and more form factors likely on the way to challenge the traditional PC, we may be in for a rematch.
European Microsoft Execs Stranded in Redmond thanks to Iceland Volcano (Seattle PI)
In Redmond this week for annual business meetings, many of Microsoft’s European leaders were scheduled to fly home Friday. They didn’t. Why? Because the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano has halted European air travel. Airplanes can’t safely fly through the clouds of ash, so most of the Eurosofties will be stuck in Seattle all weekend.

SharePoint 2010 Reaches RTM! (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Today we reached an exciting engineering milestone- the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) for Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010! RTM is the final engineering milestone and a major achievement for all of the internal teams who worked so hard to get to this point. As tirelessly as our engineering teams worked, we would never have reached this milestone without incredibly active participation from our customers and partners. More than 5,000 organizations and partners have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products, and the feedback that we’ve received from all these programs has shaped a fantastic set of products that I’m sure our customers will love.
Office, SharePoint, Project and Visio 2010 have made RTM! (CodeJedi.net)
Fantastic news, a short time ago, Microsoft officially released Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 to manufacturing! Important Dates and Product Availability Information! Recently and almost daily I have been asked about when the software will be available for download, it is a pleasure to finally be able to state exact dates. Eligible Volume Licensing Customers with active Software Assurance (SA), will be able to download the English products via the Volume Licensing Service Center starting April 27. Customers without SA will be able to purchase the new products through Volume Licensing from Microsoft partners starting May 1. You can expect to see Office 2010 in retail stores in June, and can pre-order Office 2010 at http://store.microsoft.com/OfficePreorder today to receive Office when it ships in June.
Microsoft IT Applies COBIT Control Objects with Microsoft Business Intelligence Tools (To the SharePoint)
I want to follow a previous post, IT audits, COBIT, and using business intelligence in SharePoint 2010, with a scenario that shows how Microsoft’s IT department applies the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) framework guidance to monitor and evaluate IT performance.
Brand New Mobile Interface in SharePoint 2010 (Reza Alirezaei’s Blog)
The new mobile interface in SharePoint 2010 is definitely improved comparing to the previous version. Sahil has got a short and nice blog post where he shows the basic browsing experience of a SharePoint site and a list in his iPhone. I also tested many different parts of the product in my iPhone and Windows mobile and the result is quite interesting. In this blog post, we will look at InfoPath forms and Excel Workbooks published to Excel Services.
Technical Whitepaper: SharePoint Content & Application Lifecycle Management Guidance (Made4the.NET)
I’d like to announce the release of my Technical Whitepaper on SharePoint Content & Application Lifecycle Management Guidance. With organizations expanding their usage of SharePoint as a development and web infrastructure platform, managing team development, release cycles, and updates across distributed SharePoint farms can be a complex undertaking. To make sense of this Lifecycle, Mr. Thake reviews a variety of considerations, including:
London Calling: Greetings from the SharePoint 2010 Evolution Conference! (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Remember last week when I blogged that Bamboo would be fielding an all-star team at the SharePoint Evolution Conference in London this week? Well, it seems that Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano had other plans and, as it turns out, ye olde humble correspondent was the only Bamboo staffer to make it to London before the airports shut down last Thursday. Somewhat ironically, of the four of us who were meant to be here at the conference, I’m the only one who wasn’t scheduled for booth duty. You see, the pre-Eyjafjallajokull plan had me performing my customary role at conferences, bringing the sessions to you, Bamboo Nation, via the magic of blogging. The post-Eyjafjallajokull plan, however, finds me manning the Bamboo booth as a one-man show (though I may be able to pop into a session or two), so if you’re lucky enough to have made it to London (or, indeed, are from the U.K.), by all means, please stop by booth #17 in the exhibit hall for a chat.
