Is The New ‘Open’ Microsoft For Real? (Redmond Developer News)
It was all about openness at Microsoft’s MIX10 conference this week. What’s going on with the notorious bastion of proprietary, locked-in software long known for holding out against the open-source barbarians clamoring at the Gates of Redmond? Get it? “Gates” as in Bill? Maybe with him (almost) gone, the company is changing direction.

Internet Explorer 9: What Lies Beneath? (ITvoir)
At the MIX10 Web developer conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft Corp, the software giant has announced the availability of the Internet Explorer 9(IE9) Platform Preview. With the new version, the company has emphasized on its commitment to interoperability and performance on the Web. Further, the company also seeks continuance of its dominance in the browser’s market share with IE9.

Microsoft Removes VM Hardware Requirements, Improves XP Mode (Ars Technica)
Microsoft made a slew of virtualization announcements today, affecting both current and future products. Arguably the most important tidbit is that the company has removed the virtualization layer’s hardware requirements for the XP Mode available in Windows 7. Those already running XP Mode don’t need to bother updating since they already have it working, but users who were unsure of their PC hardware can grab the update and try out XP Mode on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate. The update is available for Windows 7 32-bit (3.7MB) and Windows 7 64-bit (4.1MB).

10 More Things We’ve Learned About Windows Phone 7 Series (TechRadar)
We were all pretty intrigued to see what Ballmer would reveal at Mobile World Congress. We knew it was going to be Windows Mobile 7, but would it be up to scratch? Let’s face it, we’re annoyed at the long-winded Windows Phone 7 Series moniker (not least because it ruins our headlines), but we have to say there’s more than a glimmer of hope about what was unveiled.

Microsoft Guy Tells Open Source Conference It’s ‘Really Changing’ (Network World)
Doing his best impersonation of a fox in the chicken coop who means no harm to the chickens, Microsoft’s Stuart McKee spoke at an open source conference in San Francisco today delivering a message of peace. “We all agree we’ve had a contentious relationship in the past, but that is really changing,” said McKee, National Technology Officer for Microsoft in the U.S., who delivers technology solutions to state and local governments. He told his audience at the Open Source Business Conference that the company that built an empire on the closed software model realizes there’s a whole big world of open source software out there and it wants both worlds to work together.

Report: Google to Leave China on April 10 (CNET)
Google is expected to announce on Monday that it will withdraw from China on April 10, according to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper that cited an unidentified sales associate who works with the company. “I have received information saying that Google will leave China on April 10, but this information has not at present been confirmed by Google,” the China Business News quoted the agent as saying. The report also said Google would reveal its plans for its China-based staff that day.

Get Ready to Party – SharePoint 2010 Community Launch Party! (SharePoint Joel’s SharePoint Land)
With 55 days left till the official May 12th Launch, I was thinking.  Man I really need to throw a party.  I can’t be the only one who’s bummed about not being able to be at the press event.  I’m so excited about the launch of SharePoint 2010 and what it brings, I was thinking why not celebrate this with all my friends all over the world!!??  Microsoft has setup some great content planned for a virtual event for the Office and SharePoint 2010 launch, but unfortunately some of us want to let our hair down and count it down like it’s New Years day.

The Whiteboard Chronicles: 5 Minutes to a SharePoint Dashboard (End User SharePoint)
Over the past two weeks I’ve delivered 5 1/2 days of intense, live in the classroom training to a diverse set of people… from Raleigh last week to New York City this week. In each situation I’ve tried to place all of the solutions talked about into real world context for the people attending the sessions. Today one came up that I thought was pretty cool, so I took a picture of the whiteboard sketch.

Managing Projects and the Secret to SharePoint Success (Perspectives on SharePoint)
In this post I am going to show you the new projects list.  SharePoint sites are ideal for managing a project. There have been books written about this subject so if you need to do this there is plenty of material available.

Draft Item Security & Search Results Security Trimming (SharePoint Blues)
The content access account of MOSS search should have a read-only access to content. In some cases that is not enough – there is a list level setting to limit the visibility of draft versions of list items to only the ones with edit permissions. This means that the content access account cannot index the draft versions. So if you have a document with the latest version being 0.x it is totally invisible in search. If you have a document with the latest version being 1.x you will only see the version 1.0 in search results.
