SharePoint 2010: Five New and Improved Features (CIO)
Sharepoint, Microsoft’s one-stop “content and collaboration” platform, has been around since 2001. But it didn’t see widespread adoption until SharePoint 2007′s debut and the integration with social software, such as blogs, wikis and social networking Web sites. With SharePoint 2010, due in the first half of this year and available only in 64-bit, one of Microsoft’s main goals is to improve on these social networking tools as well as provide better offline access, easier integration with line-of-business software like CRM and ERP, and improved search. Office 2010: What’s in it for You? (Earth Times)
When Microsoft releases Office 2010 later this year, will it be an upgrade worth pursuing, or will it, like Office 2007, be one that you can easily let pass? That’s a question that’s no doubt on the minds of many existing Office users – as well as more than a few executives at Microsoft. SharePoint 2010: Developer Platform White Paper (Microsoft)
What is an application platform? It’s a broad concept that can include a range of interconnected technologies. ASP.NET is a platform for creating Web applications, for example, while at the same time it belongs to the larger application platform provided by the .NET Framework. Because the SharePoint 2010 application platform is based on ASP.NET, learning how to use it isn’t a huge learning curve for ASP.NET developers. But when does it make sense to build an application on SharePoint instead of on raw ASP.NET? The goal of this paper is to answer these questions. Doing this requires describing what the SharePoint 2010 platform provides and looking at the types of applications SharePoint is designed to support. If your application can benefit from the SharePoint framework, building it on SharePoint will enable you to focus more on creating value and less on building infrastructure. Microsoft Seeks Rare Rehearing (Ajax World Magazine)
Having lost one appeal of the i4i patent infringement decision ordering Word off the market at a cost of $290 million in damages, Microsoft last Friday asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit for a rare en banc review of its Christmas decision. It wants all 11 judges to listen to its complaints, not just the three who found for i4i on December 22. If that doesn’t work, it has threatened to try the Supreme Court, a real long shot.
