SharePoint and Social Networking With a Purpose: Next Steps (SharePointPro Connections)
Two weeks ago, I began a discussion of enterprise social networking and SharePoint. I referred to social networking as a tsunami. Carrying forward the “wave” metaphor, I woke up this morning to learn that there are forecasts for epic waves at Jaws, one of the world’s top tow-in surf breaks, which is walking distance from my home. Knowing that makes it difficult for me to focus on SharePoint as I write this week’s column—I can hear the waves, the jet skis, and the excited spectators! Coincidentally, focus is a theme of this week’s continuation of the social networking discussion. This week, we raise the question, “Why do you want to implement social networking?” You must know the answer to succeed.
Google Apps Adds Groups, Takes on SharePoint (Technologizer)
Google is filling in one of the more gaping holes in its Google Apps Web-based productivity suite: It’s announcing that it’s adding Google Groups, a business-focused variant of the consumer service that’s been around since 2001.
Lotus and SharePoint – A Mea Culpa and Other Thoughts (CMS Watch)
My colleague Adriaan mis-spoke when he said IBM was “slowly phasing out” Domino. IBM is doing no such thing. For that, I apologize. We have corrected the original post. One has to be very wary about generalizing about Lotus, since that brand extends from the likes of Lotus WCM and Connections (which are really more closely tied to WebSphere), through Quickr, to e-mail and other groupware services, down to the Lotus thick client — with much more in-between.
Microsoft Starts Planning Office 15 (Ars Technica)
Microsoft Office 2010 (also called Office 14) may not be ready to ship yet, but Redmond is already hard at work on Office 15. The tidbit comes to us from the Microsoft Access Team Blog, which starts off a post titled “Access 15 and SQL Server” with the following joyful message: “Hello everyone! As Office 2010 nears shipping, we are starting to plan Office 15. One area that we are considering improving is our SQL Server support. Based on what I’ve heard from the community, that would be most welcome. Note that we are very early in planning, and considering many possible areas of investment, I unfortunately can’t commit to any actual improvements at this time.” The post continues on with specific questions and asks for responses in the form of comments or an e-mail.
How Office 2010 Will Combat Google in the Cloud? (ITvoir)
Microsoft Office 2010, the successor of Office 2007, is planned to be released in June 2010. But, the market scenario will be different from the one what Office 2007 faced in late 2006. In 2006, the availability of Google Apps, Zoho tools and IBM’s free productivity software, Symphony were limited. Also, the OpenOffice.org from Sun Microsystems had various compatibility issues at that time. But, now things have changed.
Microsoft Azure, Server Teams Form New Cloud Division (CNET)
In a much anticipated move, Microsoft announced the combination of the Windows Azure group with the Windows Server and Solutions group into a new organization, titled the Server and Cloud Division. The new division, headed by Senior Vice President Amitabh Srivastava, will be a part of the Servers and Tools Business, headed by Bob Muglia.
Windows 7: More Hidden Features (Earth Times)
You can buy Windows 7 for its snazzy interface or its improvements in performance and compatibility – in other words, for its headline features. But what’s really exciting about the new operating system from Microsoft is discovering the under-reported features that can make your life on the computer both more productive and more fun. Windows 7 is full of these hidden gems. Here are a few.
Microsoft Patch Tuesday: Critical Update for IE (PC World)
Today was Microsoft’s final Patch Tuesday of 2009. Microsoft released a total of six new security bulletins, the most urgent one affecting a zero-day flaw in Internet Explorer for which exploit code already exists. Barring any urgent security issues or exploits circulating in the wild to force an out-of-band update, the total number of security bulletins for 2009 is 74–a 5 percent drop from the 78 security bulletins released in 2008.
Microsoft: We Will Steal Google’s Lunch (Redmond Channel Partner)
A Microsoft corporate vice president talked about the company’s business prospects, including competition with Google, at a Barclays event on Tuesday. Robert Youngjohns, Microsoft’s president of North American sales and marketing, fielded questions at the Barclays Capital Technology Conference in San Francisco. As might be expected of a marketing executive, Youngjohns was fairly bullish about Microsoft’s prospects, particularly with regard to cloud computing and the enterprise software markets.

SharePoint 2010 Dev TidBit – Want to Create Your Own Dialog? (Andrew Connell)
Seen the new dialog framework in SharePoint 2010? You know, when you want to create a new item in a list, a dialog appears. It’s actually real easy to create a new dialog… you just have to get your hands dirty with some JavaScript.
Common Compilation Error for SharePoint 2010 VS Projects (Chris O’Brien)
This post is a quick public service announcement for a beta 2 issue which I think a lot of SharePoint developers are about to hit. I can’t take any credit whatsoever for the fix, I’m simply playing the messenger here – purely because I notice that whilst the information is in the public domain now, search engine users will probably not find it. Since I’ve hit this a few times already (including when writing code for my Managed Metadata demo), I figure it’s worthy of more attention.
Using HTML Meta Tags to add Information to SharePoint Search (zevenseas)
This week Robin was working away on a tool to make it easier for people to find Team Sites across their organisation. He was evaluating the use of SharePoint Search to do it, but found that many site properties, for example the template that Publishing Sites are based on is not marked as STS_Site, were not exposed in the index. This reminded me of a very similar exploration I did a little while ago, and it reminded me that I didn’t blog about it and should have. So now I am.
