SharePoint 2010 Lists (Windows IT Pro)
While Santa Claus may be checking his list twice right about now, I spent some time last week building an application based on SharePoint lists on SharePoint 2010.  It was a great experience in the new, value-laden functionality of SP2010, and I’d like to share the take-aways with you. Before I do that, I’d also like to ask a question of you, my readers.  SharePoint 2010 can be downloaded from Microsoft now, and can be installed, so you can try it out in your enterprise.  But I know the reality for some of you might be that you don’t have time or hardware to do so. Google Wave’s Massive Potential for Business Users (Mashable)
Google Wave (Google Wave) is an innovative new way for people to communicate and collaborate. But as Gina Tripani, author of The Complete Guide To Google Wave, noted in her recent keynote at the recent Web 2.0 Expo in New York, Wave is designed for power users. Wave is hard. There are a lot of features, all bundled together, and it can be intimidating for anyone to just look at it and decide “this is a great project management tool” or “this is the way we’re going to manage our notes about the proposal.” Continue reading this entry »

EU Drops Microsoft Browser Charges (AP)
The European Union said Wednesday it is dropping antitrust charges against Microsoft Corp. after the company agreed to give Windows users a choice of up to 12 other Web browsers. Under the terms of the deal with regulators, Microsoft will avoid further EU fines if it provides a pop-up screen that lets European users — from March — replace Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or add another browser such as Mozilla’s Firefox or Google’s Chrome. The Grill: Microsoft’s Chris Capossela on Google, Twitter and that Blue Screen of Death (Computer World)
Chris Capossela’s career is a throwback, just like Dom’s, the Italian restaurant in Boston’s North End his parents ran for 45 years. Capossela has been at Microsoft ever since graduating 18 years ago, working his way up from being Bill Gates’ speechwriter to head of the Microsoft Project business, to his current role running marketing for some of Microsoft’s most lucrative products: Office, SharePoint, Exchange, as well as their new hosted equivalents. He talked to Computerworld about how his family background prepared him for Microsoft, how Microsoft plans to beat Google Apps, and how it is adding Twitter-like features to Office. SharePoint and Social Networking With a Purpose: Next Steps (SharePointPro Connections)
Two weeks ago, I began a discussion of enterprise social networking and SharePoint. I referred to social networking as a tsunami. Carrying forward the “wave” metaphor, I woke up this morning to learn that there are forecasts for epic waves at Jaws, one of the world’s top tow-in surf breaks, which is walking distance from my home. Knowing that makes it difficult for me to focus on SharePoint as I write this week’s column—I can hear the waves, the jet skis, and the excited spectators! Coincidentally, focus is a theme of this week’s continuation of the social networking discussion. This week, we raise the question, “Why do you want to implement social networking?” You must know the answer to succeed. Continue reading this entry »
