SharePoint 2010 and the Social-Networking Tsunami (Windows IT Pro)
SharePoint 2010 introduces “ready for prime time” social networking for the enterprise, with a rich feature set around social content, activity feeds, social and people search, and more. At the recent SharePoint Connections event, I hosted a (social model) discussion with several dozen IT Pros from a diverse range of enterprises. The goal of the discussion was to identify big wins and best practices for social networking in the enterprise.
First Look: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Beta (InfoWorld)
Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is a major upgrade from SharePoint 2007 in several areas. It has a much improved user interface, especially for online editing. It supports more browsers. It does a better job of integrating with Microsoft Office. It provides more opportunities to developers and designers, as well as to shops that might want to consolidate other products (such as blogs and wikis and business applications) with SharePoint.
The Keys to Microsoft SharePoint Implementation Success (CTOEdge)
Microsoft SharePoint has the flexibility to be an organization’s intranet, content management system, knowledge management system, and business process automation platform. No other system can wear so many hats and give its users so many available features and functionality.
5 Reasons Why Executive SharePoint Ignorance is Not Bliss (Part 1) (CMSWire)
The job of how to implement SharePoint in an organization should not be in the hands of the IT department. It belongs with the business and the backing of executive decision makers. Here’s why. “Our SharePoint implementation was unsuccessful because management just doesn’t get it! Our CIO decided one day that I’m the SharePoint guru because I’m the Windows system administrator in our company. I was asked to install and deploy SharePoint to our 500 users within three months. This was a year ago and today, as you can imagine, SharePoint is not being fully utilized, users still can’t find what they need and management is questioning why SharePoint is not delivering its promise of improved collaboration.”
SharePoint on Your Smartphone Just Got Better With the New Release of Mobile Entrée (PR Web)
H3 Solutions, Inc., today announced that it has released an upgrade for its innovative Microsoft SharePoint mobile application framework. The new Mobile Entrée v1.2 released this month further extends the powerful enterprise features of SharePoint to Windows Phone, iPhone, Android, Symbian S60, Palm WebOS, and Blackberry Smartphones.
Windows 8 To Appear In 2012 (IT Pro Portal)
Slides apparently displayed at Microsoft’s Professional Developers’ Conference (PDC) showed that the successor of the just-launched Windows 7, Windows 8, is expected to be released in 2012. The slides, which bore the title “Windows Server Release Cadence” and were leaked by Stephen Chapman of Microsoft Kitchen, show that the next major Windows operating system would appear in three years’ time and that Windows 8 is still only a codename.
Office 2010 Beta – 32-bit or 64-bit – The Choice is Clear (PC Pro)
Microsoft Office 2010 Beta comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and this is the first time that a 64-bit version of Office has been available. 64-bit processing brings some advantages but are they outweighed by the disadvantages of being on the bleeding edge of technology?
Cheat Sheet: Google Chrome OS (Silicon.com)
Google Chrome, that’s just a web browser isn’t it? Not anymore. Google have used their Chrome browser as the basis for a new operating system that shares the same name. Don’t tell me I have to shell out for another OS, I’ve just bought Windows 7. You wouldn’t be able to buy the Chrome OS even if you wanted to. Firstly it’s free, and secondly you will not be able to install it on existing machines. The OS will only come pre-installed on new computers, initially on netbooks from the latter part of 2010.
10 Reasons Why Microsoft Should Fear Chrome OS (IT Web)
With the preview of Google’s Chrome OS released, Microsoft should be concerned. If Chrome OS delivers on Google’s promises, it could eventually capture the operating system market. The computing world is moving to cloud computing on the Web. Chrome OS, starting from its base as a Web OS, could win over a host of developers and users to this new platform. If this happens then Chrome OS could become the first new operating system in many years that has a serious chance of shaking Windows’ dominance on the world’s PCs.
HTML 5 Progresses Despite Challenges (San Francisco Chronicle)
Development of HTML 5, the highly touted upgrade to the language of the Web, is progressing but still faces obstacles, including lack of a standard video codec, said an official of the World Wide Web Consortium at a gathering on Tuesday.

Connecting TFS 2010 Projects to SharePoint Sites (Weblog Ton Stegeman [MVP] )
The new Team Foundation Server (currently in beta 2) has the option to connect TFS project to an existing SharePoint site. This also allows you to specify on which SharePoint server to create new project sites. For us this is important, because a lot of our projects start way before the TFS project gets created. Then we end up moving all files to the TFS project site, or we have two project sites for the same project. When we go live with TFS2010, we no longer have to transfer files. And we can host the TFS project sites on our company SharePoint implementation, which means 1 WSS server less to maintain. With one of my colleagues we managed to get this working in our test environment. This post shows you how we have set it up.

Collaboration Without Compromise (Microsoft 2010 Engineering)
Lots of the talk around Office documents these days seems to be about “Collaboration”. “Team work”. “Sharing”. And yet, you don’t get an A on your term paper because four people were on your team. And you don’t get promoted because your business plan involved 30 different reviewers. No doubt, it almost always takes a group of people to get the job done these days, but the job is still about the output.
Navigation Link Missing in Settings for a SharePoint Site Collection (SharePoint Blank)
I received a high priority email earlier today from a self-professed SharePoint Admin “noob” asking for help with a problem. The problem he was having involved the lack of a Navigation hyperlink under the Look and Feel area of Site Settings for a newly created copy of an existing site collection. The Navigation link remained in place on the original site collection, but was nowhere to be found on the copy which had been created via stsadm.
