Steve Ballmer: How SharePoint is Like the PC (CMS Wire)
Probably one of the most interesting interviews you could have is with Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, on the topic of SharePoint (news, site). Oh to be a fly on the wall in that interview room — a fly that could also ask questions, mind you. Forrester analyst Matthew Brown had that opportunity after Ballmer’s keynote at SharePoint Conference 2009. Here are a few of the things that Ballmer said that caught our attention.
Overview: SharePoint 2010 Metadata and Taxonomy Management (CMS Wire)
I finally got around to reading the preliminary SharePoint 2010 taxonomy and metadata info on MSDN. As most of you know, MOSS 2007 had some serious challenges in this regard (e.g., no hierarchical metadata, no sharing controlled vocabularies across site collections, etc.) — and they caused information architects like me much consternation.
Office Starter 2010 Beta Invitations Sent to Testers (Softpedia)
Microsoft is wasting little time with the development process of Windows 7. The Redmond-based company is on the verge of giving green light to the first Beta development milestone of Office 2010, and in fact has already started sending out invitations to test-drive the Starter edition of the next iteration of the Office System. In the first half of October 2009, Microsoft revamped its Stock Keeping Unit strategy for Office 2010, adding a free edition to the lineup of product SKUs. A select pool of testers is already receiving invitations to test Office 2010 Starter Beta, according to IThinkDiff.
For the Enterprise, Google Apps Fights Uphill Battle with Microsoft (ComputerWorld)
While companies are starting to seriously look at the hosted applications from Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. — and Google Apps is winning converts among schools and small firms — Microsoft’s incumbent status gives it a leg up, according to CIOs interviewed at the Society for Information Management (SIM) conference in Seattle this week.
Microsoft Developer Technologies Take Center Stage at PDC (InfoWorld)
With a full schedule on tap, the 2009 Microsoft PDC (Professional Developers Conference) next week will tout efforts ranging from the company’s Windows Azure cloud platform to plans for programming languages. Session descriptions for the Los Angeles event reveal topics such as “Architecting and Developing for Windows Azure,” “Future Directions for C# and Visual Basic” and “Software + Services Identity Roadmap Update.”
Does Microsoft Want You to Hate Netbooks? (CIO)
A survey published this week by consumer shopping site Retrevo puts Windows 7 Starter on trial for disappointing netbook users who were expecting more features and fewer restrictions. With Windows 7 now available to all, Microsoft is between a rock and hard place as it tries to replace the aging Windows XP without overemphasizing Windows 7 on netbooks.
Microsoft Launches Bing in the UK (V3)
Microsoft has officially launched Bing in the UK, but the release does not appear to have the same features seen in the US version. Microsoft said today that Bing would help users to not only search, but also make more informed choices. Although the US version was launched some five months ago, leaving other nations waiting, Microsoft said that the time had been well spent as it carried out user research and behavioural analysis to provide a search and information site that was truly useful, locally.
Google Chrome OS to Launch Within a Week (The Washington Post)
Google’s Chrome OS project, first announced in July, will become available for download within a week, we’ve heard from a reliable source. Google previously said to expect an early version of the OS in the fall.
Around the Blogosphere
Types of Solutions (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
Solutions that leverage Business Connectivity Services (BCS) typically fall into one of three high level categories:
Simple solutions in SharePoint 2010, Microsoft Outlook 2010 or Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010
Intermediate XML-based declarative solutions in Outlook 2010
Advanced code-based solutions that use the public Business Connectivity Services object model (these can target any Office application via a VSTO add-in, or any custom application)
Hiding the New Toolbar Button in SharePoint with jQuery (Fear and Loathing)
Another quick little fun thing today. Many times you might want (need) to hide the “New” button on a list toolbar. You know the one I mean? Why would you want to do such a thing? For example on a project I’m building I actually call the NewForm.aspx page with a querystring because I want to pre-populate my form with some vales. As such, I don’t want users to create new items in a list without these references and since they have to come from another list I’m left with the problem of trying to restrict them from creating new items but still offer them the ability to use the features of the list like alerts, exporting to spreadsheets, etc. Yes, the “New” button isn’t available for readers of a list but for contributors it is and for admins you can’t just turn some of this stuff off easily.

How to Live Without the CQWP (Content Query Web Part) in Windows SharePoint Services (Hosted or Not) (Brain Litter)
As someone who often helps small businesses get rolling with SharePoint solutions based on Windows SharePoint Services (WSS 3.0), hosted or not, there are some limitations that customers don’t always realize at first. First off, I try to provide a reasonably balanced overview of the differences between in house and hosted, here.

Why is this good for you…well when you are contributing to the new site you’ll be using the new SharePoint 2010 platform for starters!
