SharePoint 2010 Dev Center Ramps Up, Adds BCS Resources (Redmond Developer News)
Microsoft yesterday announced that the SharePoint 2010 Getting Started site is live, along with Business Connectivity Services (BCS) documentation. The new SharePoint 2010 site features 10 instructional modules such as “Creating Silverlight User Interfaces” and “Creating Dialog Boxes and Ribbon Controls” for SharePoint 2010, which is set for public beta next month and final release sometime around the middle of next year.

Azure Billing To Start in February (Redmond Developer News)
Microsoft announced its plans for moving from the Windows Azure previews to commercialization today. Commercial billing of the Azure platform will start February 1, 2010. New Windows Azure Platform features will be announced at PDC next month, according to a Windows Azure Launch Update posting by Microsoft found on numerous Azure-related blogs. Developers will have CTP access to those new features and the Windows Azure platform –- Windows Azure, SQL Azure and .NET Services –- through December 31st.

What Microsoft Understands About Virtualisation (and a Problem for VMware) (ZDNet)
When VMware’s main competition was a little company called Connectix (100 people to VMware’s 200), the two virtualisation teams were best enemies; staring each other down, going head to head and planning to crush the opposition and own the market.

Windows 7: The Readers Speak (PC World)
Reactions to last week’s screed about Windows 7 (“Will Windows 7 change our minds about Microsoft?”) came in fast and furious, with readers weighing in on every side of the issue. Let’s start with some hate mail from G.G., whom one can only presume is a bit of a Microsoft fanboy:

Microsoft, Yahoo Weigh In On FCC’s Proposed ‘Open Internet’ Rules (Broadband Census)
Microsoft and Yahoo on Thursday gingerly weighed into the Federal Communications Commission’s proposed rules governing internet access – otherwise known as “Net neutrality” – that were announced last week. The two companies offered up, to BroadbandCensus.com, carefully crafted comments splitting the difference between the hardening battle lines between Google and AT&T.

Cloud Computing: Simply SaaS Renamed? (ComputerWorld)
Is cloud computing just a renaming of SaaS (software as a service) in today’s buzzword-prone IT landscape? After all, both involve accessing applications over the Internet, with those applications generally residing on third-party servers. But industry executives cited subtle differences Thursday at the SIAA (Software & Information Industry Association) OnDemand 2009 conference in San Jose, Calif., during a panel session pertaining to cloud computing, business models, and the enterprise.

Web Goes Worldwide With International Domains (PC World)
As expected, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, more commonly referred to as ICANN, approved the use of non-Latin characters in domain names. Concluding a week of meetings in Seoul, South Korea, the ICANN vote takes the Web a step closer to actually living up to the ‘World Wide’ part of its name.

How to Build a SharePoint 2010 Development Machine (Part I) (Eli Robillard’s World of Blog.)
I was going to hold off on posting this until the public beta drops, but anyone preparing for the drop will want to get the right hardware, OS and optionally virtualization in place now. Then when the beta drops I’ll write more about specific steps to get SQL, SharePoint and your development tools installed.

SharePoint: SPCascadingDropdowns Demystified (or Mystified, Depending on Your View) (End User SharePoint)
In my  jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services, one of the most popular functions is $().SPServices.SPCascadeDropdowns.  The SPCascadeDropdowns function lets you set up cascading dropdowns on SharePoint forms. What this means is that you can enforce hierarchical relationships between column values.  This is sometimes called connected dropdowns or linked dropdowns (or probably other things I haven’t run across yet).

Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 – What’s Coming (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
For three years now the Microsoft SharePoint team in Redmond have been developing new and very exciting functionality for the SharePoint platform.  SharePoint 2010 will essentially be the fourth major version of the platform since the first version shipped in 2001.  SharePoint Server is the fastest growing server product Microsoft has ever developed, with over $1Bn in revenue and over 100 million users and growing!  Last week in Las Vegas at the SharePoint conference over 7,400 delegates showed up – almost double on the last conference – and that in a down economy.  I think that statistic speaks volumes about SharePoint and it’s meteoric rise.

Using Local Accounts with SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint 2010)
If you haven’t already you will soon get your hands on SharePoint 2010 and you will start to set up your development environments. If you are like me you want to create a “Server Farm” but use local accounts for all your application pools and services. The reason is that you don’t want to add a lot of test accounts in your domain. But in SharePoint 2010 you can’t do this (unless you choose the standalone installation). SharePoint will show an error telling you that you have to use domain accounts in a server farm environment.

An Overview of the SharePoint 2010 Sandbox Solution (SharePoint 2010)
Since Bamboo was a member of the Microsoft Technology Adoption Program (TAP) for Office 2010, I had an opportunity to test out early builds of the next version of SharePoint earlier this year. Spotlights were shone upon the cool “F5″ feature and how the new VS2010 along with SP2010 will make developer’s lives easier.  Nevertheless, my own focus remained on the new SharePoint feature known as Sandbox solution.
