SPC09 The Future of SharePoint Project Management (CMSWire)
One of the immediate values SharePoint can deliver to an organization is the ability to address project management challenges, such as inefficient communication among stakeholders, poor information management practices and undefined project collaboration standards that compromises project success.
Offline SharePoint Tool Promised for Mac Users (ZDNet)
Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit is working on a tool that will allow Mac users to take SharePoint files offline for editing. It will not be a Mac equivalent of Groove, the Office collaboration desktop client that will become SharePoint Workspace in the upcoming Office 2010, the SharePoint team told ZDNet UK. The promised tool also will not offer Groove’s existing peer-to-peer features on the Mac.
Microsoft’s Big Week: All Windows 7, All the Time (eWeek)
Microsoft finally released its long-in-development Windows 7 operating system in a high-profile launch in New York City on Oct. 22. Although Microsoft became a giant by focusing on the desktop, new functionalities for Windows 7 suggests that Redmond recognizes that many applications and platforms are gravitating increasingly toward the crowd. The big questions are how fast businesses running Windows XP may leap to using Windows 7, and what Microsoft’s competition will do in response.
Day One With Windows 7 (Tech Universe)
Windows 7 is here and not a moment too soon. Microsoft’s two-and-a-half year old operating system is a dog, and will hopefully be put to pasture. After many years of development, Windows 7 shipped October 22, and after a full day of using Windows 7 Professional, I have to admit I am really liking what I have seen so far. Windows 7 is a more elegant operating system that does away with a lot of the complaints that Vista was an OS that acted like an overcautious granny. Read on for some nifty new features.
Windows 7 Driver Support Remains Dicey (InfoWorld)
Spotty support for networked all-in-one printers in particular may be a testing, QA, and certification issue; some notebook drivers aren’t yet available either.
Microsoft Launches a Revolution, Apple Launches a Mouse (TechNewsWorld)
Microsoft has got its groove back — at least when it comes to designing an operating system that really delivers. By comparison, Apple’s most recent product launch — a multitouch mouse — looks almost laughable. Still, Microsoft could definitely learn a few things from Apple’s product presentations. Redmond needs to match its marketing prowess to its engineering.
Google Competes for the Future; Microsoft, the Past (CNET)
Google was born on the Web and is increasingly giving Microsoft fits by forcing the decades-old software giant to compete on Google’s terms. Like open source. Like cloud computing. Microsoft may shore up its fortunes in the short term with a successful Windows 7 launch. But in the long term, it’s very success with outdated “desktop” products threaten to cede the market to Google.
How to Make Cloud Computing Work (ITWeb)
In the previous Industry Insight, I considered how software as a service (SaaS) could confer competitive advantage relative to other systems, including ERP. Now I will review critical aspects of the risk-based billing model that makes cloud computing work in the South African context: It is simply not possible for a CIO to know everything there is to know about hardware, software and networking, but they should know all there is to know about how an integrated IT solution serves the best interests of the business.

SharePoint and Records Management: Part 4 of 4 (UK SharePoint Team)
This is the fourth and final post in a series on Records Management using SharePoint Server 2007:
Deploy a SharePoint Site Map by Applying Application Content to Local Server (SharePointSecurity.com)
Deploying sitemaps to a SharePoint server can take on many forms, however the most common seems to be placing it in a Feature Receiver to automate the provisioning on trapping. I like this approach too, however after looking at a few solutions online I thought I would throw out an approach to do this using the SPWebService.ContentService.ApplyApplicationContentToLocalServer method garnishing files in a generic format using SPUtility.GetGenericSetupPath.
SharePoint Testing Strategies (Eli Robillard’s World of Blog.)
Someone recently asked about test plans and how to test components during development so you can be comfortable they’ll perform well when hosted on large farms. The short answer is that you want to create the best simulation you can, and that means creating a test farm as close to production as possible, and testing scenarios with patterns and data as close to production as possible. With mission-critical apps the test environment should be identical with production, but in most cases it won’t be. Recent versions of LoadRunner do well for building the tests, earlier versions have issues (e.g. with JavaScript and with scripting against dynamically named / generated file sets). Visual Studio 2010 contains load-testing tools that work great against SharePoint 2010, I’m really looking forward to testing these when beta 2 is released next month. The Developer Dashboard is another great tool for breaking down the load times of each component on your page, the performance of methods in your call stack, and the latency of calls to background services; this will be an indispensible tool for checking performance.
New Business Intelligence Services in SharePoint Server 2010 (To the SharePoint)
The poster, Getting started with business intelligence in SharePoint Server 2010, is a review of all the business intelligence (BI) services in SharePoint Server 2010 (Beta) and can be downloaded in Visio, PDF, and XPS file formats. You will notice that Performance Point Server 2007 is integrated into SharePoint Server 2010 (Beta), to add business intelligence features such as dashboards, scorecards, KPIs, and more. The poster includes the following information.
To SharePoint from Paper – A Best of Both Worlds SharePoint 2010 Scenario (NetworkWorld)
Imagine a scenario where you need to collect information on forms where carrying a computer is difficult or prohibited – court personnel collecting information in correctional facilities, construction personnel collecting walk-through information on job sites, or collecting data in a drug clinical trial – but where you want the results to be used electronically. The solution: Capturx for SharePoint Server from Adapx.
SharePoint 2010 Top 10 Features and Resources (SharePoint Joel’s SharePoint Land)
I’ve been held to NDA for the past couple of years. What a relief and joy it is to be able to speak openly about the great innovations in SharePoint 2010. This list is a mix and match of what I consider the big announcements, I’m sure this list could grow tons if it was taken at a feature by feature level for SharePoint 2010, but I’ve tried to group these by what I consider investment areas that pay off and help justify both playing with the public beta and justify upgrading when you have the chance. There are a lot of others who are making their lists… there’s Ketaahns SharePoint 14 list. (I found this link after I was done, and it’s amazing how close the lists are…) The SharePoint Team blog has a rundown of the SharePoint 2010 Features broken down by audience including a video, that is definitely one to ingest if you haven’t.

SPC: Upgrading Your Website to SharePoint 2010 with Andrew Connell and Chris Johnson (SharePoint 2010)
I only had time to catch one session before my flight home today, so I was looking for a strong finish. Andrew Connell and Chris Johnson’s session on upgrading your website to SharePoint 2010 looked to fit the bill and, sure enough, did not disappoint in the slightest. With three separate demos, one on the basic upgrade process, another on applying Web Content Management (WCM) to the site, and the last on Content Query improvements, Andrew and Chris remarkably managed to simulate a complete upgrade during the course of a single session.
