SharePoint: Implementation Without Insight Is a Dangerous Thing (IT Business Edge)
I’ve begun to realize my pop culture references date me as the dinosaur that I am. Just the other day, I used a clip of a Saturday Night Live sketch (starring the original cast, with Gilda, Dan and Chevy) to make a point about Microsoft’s SharePoint, calling it the Shimmer Floor Wax of the enterprise. You remember Shimmer (if you’re fortysomething). It’s the faux product that was a floor wax and a dessert topping. Continue reading this entry »

Google’s Wave is Building Off the Enterprise Shore (KM World)
Google’s Wave (http://wave.google.com) is a Swiss Army knife of communication and information management services. What most pundits have downplayed is the potential for Google to wear down certain market barriers. In the consumer market, Google has had no answer to the surging growth of Facebook.com or the microblogging phenomenon Twitter.com. But there’s another granite cliff standing between Google and significant revenue: Microsoft SharePoint. The Google Wave may be the digital force needed to grind down the SharePoint barrier. Google wants to tap into the billions of dollars Microsoft has in its enterprise market. Continue reading this entry »

SharePoint Is Shimmer Floor Wax of the Enterprise (IT Business Edge)
Microsoft’s SharePoint is the Shimmer Floor Wax of the enterprise. Like Shimmer, which is a floor wax and a dessert topping, SharePoint seems to do it all. Microsoft certainly seems to think so. As I wrote earlier this month, SharePoint has at least six “pillars” or functions, according to the company’s marketing materials. Continue reading this entry »

Largely Unplanned SharePoint Growth Causing Enterprise Problems (CMS Wire)
There’s a lot of anticipation about the upcoming SharePoint 2010 release. But back on Earth, the reality is that SharePoint 2007 has already become a key component of enterprise infrastructure. In fact, according to a recent IDG survey, 62% of CIOs said that SharePoint was a critical component of their technology portfolio. And these organizations have big plans for expanding SharePoint use in the next year. Continue reading this entry »

How to Monitor your SharePoint Environment (Search Win IT)
As SharePoint becomes a more critical component of your infrastructure, it also becomes a service that needs to be more closely monitored to ensure its availability. But many organizations mistakenly try to treat SharePoint like other application servers, such as SQL Server. The reality is that SharePoint can be incredibly more complicated. Microsoft Warns of Chaos if Word Sales are Halted (Computer World)
Microsoft Corp. warned last week that an injunction preventing it from selling Word in the U.S. after Oct. 10 would cause “massive disruptions” to sales of its Office software, as well as to key partners like Best Buy Co., Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. A week earlier, U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Davis had issued the injunction and ordered that Microsoft pay $290 million in damages and interest to Toronto-based i4i Inc. for infringing on that company’s patent for a document system that uses XML custom formatting. HTML 5 Steps Up (GCN)
Earlier this month, the Microsoft engineers overseeing Internet Explorer offered their feedback on the latest draft of the proposed version 5 of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML 5). For many, Microsoft’s interest was a sign that the spec is finally gaining some much-needed momentum. The “IE team is reviewing the current editor’s draft of the HTML 5 spec and gathering our thoughts. We want to share our feedback and discuss this in the working group,” wrote Microsoft engineer Adrian Bateman, in an e-mail to the working group list. Continue reading this entry »

Do SharePoint Right Before SharePoint Does You Wrong (CMS Watch)
I recently advised a global consumer goods firm about how to integrate their various Social Software implementations and where to place SharePoint in that mix. This was that rare company who had not yet implemented SharePoint hardly at all, beyond a few WSS pilots. In other words, that mythical “greenfield” environment that consultants can dream about, but rarely exist in real life. Continue reading this entry »
